Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyson Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I met Kacey (my partner) when I moved to Fort Worth with my husband from Austin. We both were working in another boutique in town just part-time. Kacey was in law school at the time, and I was just trying to meet some new friends in a new city.
After working there and loving what we were doing, we decided we wanted to open our own place. We opened Esther Penn Ft Worth in October in 2014, then Dallas 2 years later and then San Antonio this last spring.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been really lucky, and are still blown away by peoples support. Of course, there are things we have had to learn and overcome, but overall we have been very fortunate.
I think what we struggle with constantly is staying relevant and fresh; there are so many great shops and brands out there, so we have to try and stay one step ahead.
Esther Penn – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We try really hard to keep the shops looking super fresh and make sure we stock the best basics and things you want to wear all the time but also have those pieces that are maybe a little more out of your comfort zone.
We want to store vibe to be like you are shopping with your girlfriends, that you feel super comfortable asking us questions or our opinions. We also try to pull things for you based on your style so that you maybe try something different and hopefully you love it 🙂
I think Esther Penn is known for that which makes me super happy. We want everyone to leave excited about their outfit.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Being able to come to work and it really not feel like work is a dream. I get to work with my best friend and be surrounded by clothes… it’s pretty sweet.
