Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Bradley.
Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I taught myself how to braid on my sister’s head when I was ten years old. And continue braiding hair for friends and family over the years. I never thought that I would be a hairstylist when I was younger, I just started braiding, thinking it was something fun for me to do to be creative. I started out my career as a dental assistant and quickly found out that it was not for me and a friend reminded me that I had this talent, I decided to become a professional braider. I started off at a salon with a more older crowd and learned a lot, then moved to Barbershop with mostly men where I met an inspiring lady. She owns the current salon and barbershop I work at. I was one of the first stylists to help open SheCosmo hair salon and barbershop in 2016. We have developed a great family-like bond amongst the stylist and barbers. After braiding for three years professionally, I decided that I wanted to add another skill and went to school to be a Manicurist. I got my license in November 2018 and I will continue to build my skills and offer services in early 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been smooth. For the most part, I have had ups and downs mostly caused by me, but it was just growing pains learning from my mistakes and watching others make them as well, it wasn’t a bumpy road because I found my salon home quickly and I’m so thankful.
Please tell us about Beauty by Rheana B.
My business Beauty by Rheana B is all about being beautiful in your own way. I specialize in natural styles and natural nails. I do a lot of protective styles like box braids, Marley twist, feed-in braids. I also maintain and style locs to keep them neat styled and healthy. I promote natural nail growth and protection with acrylic or gel. My business grows because of the people that I serve. I love what I do and I love making people smile with what I’ve created. I love getting a challenging style and executing it. Beauty by Rheana B is about feeling beautiful in your own skin, accepting yourself, and enhancing your beauty, whether you are male or female. I’m proud that I never gave up even when there were days that I didn’t have any clients at all. I’m very diligent and what I want my work ethic is amazing and I pray that one day, I will be a salon owner. What sets me apart from other operators is that I’m here to work and clean what you want, we definitely can build a bond but I’m definitely going to work first.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories for being a kid is when my mom will get done braiding my hair and putting beads at the ends, I’ll go look in the mirror and just turn my head every which way just to hear the sounds of the beads.
