Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Hayes.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all began out of necessity. Having five children, one with special needs, there was always a struggle with money. Five kids always need shoes, money for sports, doctor bills, vacations, even groceries. My husband worked full time for a family business while I started a sewing business on Etsy. I built my social media crowd and just started selling whatever I could make. I got tired of sewing and had to meet the demands of our special needs child, so I decided to try a multi-level marketing company. When our second child was a baby, I had a baking business. Whatever I could do from home, I did! My husband and I are both hard workers. We get an idea in our heads and we go with it! I saw the trend for leather earrings and told him “We could do this. I KNOW my passion for fashion would draw people in.
I know moms will buy!” So we did it! We researched and went for it! I knew I wanted us to be different from the other leather earring companies, so my husband I began designing wood and metal earrings. Now we are known for many TRENDS, not just one. From the two of us to now 12 employees, shipping 500-600 packages worldwide each week, and a very busy storefront, it exploded!
Has it been a smooth road?
The struggles are real. Running a business with your spouse, that can be tough. We are both first born children with a lot of drive. That’s how this works, but we butt heads a lot. Five children who have five different schedules, HARD. We have teenagers down to a kindergartner. Then autism. Our sweet non-verbal son with autism is difficult. He requires 24/7 care. Another challenge is finding employees with character. It’s very difficult to find people will to work hard. We love our team and do everything we can to show them!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Trend Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Our tagline is “BE GENEROUS ALWAYS”. I once heard someone say that if you want your business to grow, give stuff away. I know as a mom of five how hard it is to buy stuff for yourself. Someone always needs shoes or something! A $27 pair of earrings can be tough for some moms. Well, we give a free pair with every single order! If you spend $60 or more, we give two pairs! The freebie pairs change every three days! Women wait on the edge of their seats to see the next freebie! It’s so fun! We are known for the freebies!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We chose the name The Trend Shop so we have the freedom to change when we want. Trends change and we want to change with it! The sky is the limit!
