Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Glasgow.
Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I have been working, I’ve almost always held an administrative or executive assistant role. I realized that even in jobs where the environment was fast-paced and super busy, there was always downtime.
Back in 2013, I had an idea to take that downtime and capitalize on it. I thought, “what if I could use this downtime to work on other projects for additional income.” Thus, Virtual Administrative Solutions was born! My husband and I founded the company in 2013 with the intent to provide remote administrative/secretarial, creative, and technical support to businesses of various sizes.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth at all. After starting the company in 2013, I worked it as a side hustle for five years. At the time, I thought I was this genius and the first person to ever think to do something like this. Because I thought this idea was “new,” I did not realize all of the resources that were available to me to help, me succeed. Things started off super slow. I started networking locally and did some work for the local Chamber of Commerce and a couple of one-off projects. By the time 2017 rolled around, our company name and what we do was beginning to circulate around the Shreveport-Bossier area and business began to pick up!
Not long after, we decided to move. Just before we moved, I picked up what would be my first semi long term contract. I decided that once we were settled in our new city, I would not return to work and I would pursue the business full time.
In 2018 we made our transition here into the metro and I have been running the company full time every since. There has certainly been a fair share of blood, sweat, and tears. Almost weekly when it comes to the tears. The more I became familiar and experienced with the resources and how the industry works, things kind of took off from there. We are having great success in terms of growth and in January, we released our first online course titled Future Proofing you Pockets: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Ahead of the Virtual Assistant Curve and Dominating the Industry.
Please tell us about Virtual Administrative Solutions.
Virtual Administrative Solutions is an upscale virtual assistant firm and full service agency that provides remote administrative, creative, and technical support to businesses.
Any administrative service that can be outsourced, calendar management and scheduling, travel arrangements, email support (customer service), and anything else, we can manage. The creative and technical piece allows us and our VAs to support clients in the areas of social media management, graphic design, website design and updates, and other things of that nature!
I am most proud of our growth as a company and the way we provide our services. We have amazing clients that provide us amazing reviews and I am just honestly most thankful to be a company that thrives off the desire to serve.
The thing that sets us apart from other businesses is our desire to truly serve with compassion and really provide a solution for any size business. There are so many businesses that need the types of assistance we provide, but don’t have the desire, finances, and/or space to hire someone full time. There are also businesses that are 100% online and do need and desire to have someone to support them full time but are completely unaware that an option such as this even exists.
Another component that sets us apart is our online training community. I serve as a Virtual Assistant coach, teaching and training other individuals to enter the industry and succeed. We currently have an online training program, one-on-one coaching sessions, private strategy sessions, and will be launching our online portal and private Facebook community soon. Serving as an agency allows us to be able to train individuals up, and add them to our agency pool upon completion of whichever online training track they chose. So we are essentially a one-stop-shop for this industry.
What were you like growing up?
Ha! So, as a kid, I was apparently of a strong entrepreneurial spirit. I can vividly remember getting in trouble in the second grade from selling things. I started off selling coupons that I would get for free from the machines that spit them out on the various aisles in Krogers back in the 90s. I got busted by the teacher. She called my parents and of course I got in trouble. My pocket full of whatever change I had accumulated from that day’s sales was returned to my schoolmates. After getting caught, I then began making these bookmarks out of Elmer’s glue and drops of coloring from markers that would form and dry on top of the old spacemaker crayon boxes. And then I began selling those. I may get in trouble for this interview because I’m not sure if my parents knew I picked up a second hustle.
Aside from that, I was very active in sports and dance. I played recreational soccer from the time I could walk up until I aged out. I then transitioned into Jr. Varsity and on to Varsity until I graduated. Throughout my lifelong soccer journey, I learned many things that still stick with me. Things like always showing up, even if no one else does. How to always be aggressive and pursue the win. Because of that, I STILL have a winner’s spirit. I learned how to lead. Most importantly, I learned how win humbly and lose gracefully.
I was always very colorful, a happy spirit, creative, had big thoughts and ideas, and of course, a handful of trouble every now and then. I’m pretty much the exact same, just with a couple decades worth of wisdom added on.
