Meet Amber Spellious of True Nails in Duncanville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Spellious.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Basically, as a single mother trying to support my daughter and I in the big, new city (Dallas) doing as many women do, I was getting my nails done at an Asian nail salon in Balch Springs. And on a particular day the accounting in me (accounting degree) saw dollar signs and family support. I pondered on the opportunity to work for myself. I have always practiced manicures on myself, I am detail oriented, and hold a steady hand. I can do this I told myself. It would also allow me time to return to college, have a flexible schedule for my daughter, and a faster way to make more money. So, I quit my corporate job and attended beauty school to obtain later my manicurist license. My mother was an entrepreneur as well, so she named my first owned nail company, “True Nails”. It has remained that name in her honor and in staying true to my nail values.

In my many years of salon and spa experiences I wanted to be better, friendlier, cleaner, more sterile, safer, and more educated to help the general public in a way that nail technicians were not. While I wanted to offer services done the way I liked my nails done, I also wanted to create an environment that people would really want. None the less, with the help of God, I have been blessed with many of great opportunities to establish a clientele and a legitimate business in the predominantly Asian-ran nail industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
You know that is a hard question because in the beginning of my nail career we (techs) might say it is, but I knew I needed experiences from all over the place in order for me to learn the ins and outs to the business. I guess we all struggle with building a steady clientele and perfecting our nail craft. But for the most part, it was smooth for me. I learned from all of my experiences, good or bad. The only struggle I could think of is finding a permanent home to service my clients. When no one shares your views in my profession, you tend to feel very alone. I knew I had to get to a place in my career so that I could run things and manage things the way I wanted, but finding a steady place to do that was always a struggle. Ensuring my clients from all over the metroplex could get to me conveniently was always large concern. But I learned quickly what loyalty truly meant. I have had clients’ young, old, healthy, sick, wealthy, poor, and all races. We are one and we love and care for one another. Truly Appreciated!

Please tell us about True Nails.
True Nails is a medically advanced nail salon. I am the Salon Owner, founder, and Lead Medical Nail Technician. I have mastered my craft with additional training and certifications such as a Certified Medically Advanced Nail Tech and Certified Clinical Podiatry Medical Assistant specializing in diabetic foot care. In laymen terms, I am a Master Pedicurist. Some South Dallas physicians work with me directly, ensuring their patients and my clients get the healthiest, most sterile and advanced nail care by referring their patients to me. Communication between your physician and your medically advanced nail tech can provide vital information pertaining to any manicure or pedicure service.

I am very proud of my skills in which I have obtained. I wanted to be the best and give the best services and knowledge to my clients; and with my accomplishments, I do just that. I will continue to further that knowledge as well, hoping one day I can train nail techs the things I have learned.

But as a whole, I love my clients, they set us apart from other nail salons. True Nails is family friendly, come as you are healthy, professional, clean, yet fun and quaint little nail salon. I have never aspired to be huge. I feel that my clients prefer our little humble abode. We service men, women, professionals, elderly, disable, and even make some routine foot care visits to local nursing homes, or retirement facilities. Being that I started True Nails as a mobile company at first, I have also always been flexible enough to offer mobile nail services to my clients as well. So if they cannot come to me, I go to them! Truly Authentic!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Again, I have learned a lot from all of my experiences. But if I really had it to do all over again, there may have been some opportunities in my career that I passed on out of fear. For instance, I would have believed in myself more and took more risks. I will never know what could have happened because I was afraid to walk through open doors. However, once I realized this about myself, every door that opened to me not only did I walk through, I ran through! These open doors have led to my success. Thank God!

Excellent article. I go to Amber for mani/pedis. My retirement from teaching gift to myself. My husband goes for pedis to take care of his feet because he’s diabetic. She’s great!
