Today we’d like to introduce you to Amir Curry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amir. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I specialize in people and portrait photography! Melanin is my main focus!
I try to do it all so that I can be a one stop shop! If you need a party photographed, your pet fish, or just because its Monday call me and I’m there!
Lol, my life story is complex. I was born in Trenton, New Jersey! East coast all day! However, my mom wanted to move once my older brother graduated high school. So she packed us up and moved us to the Big state of Texas! Grew up playing basketball and football. When I got into 7th grade I found Track and Field! Fell in love and become the best at my craft! Number one in the nation at my age for long and triple jump.
Summer going into junior year of high school I was victim of a near fatal car accident that severed my left ankle crushed the left side of my face and broke my left arm. Caused a brain bleed and burst a hole in the back of my left eye causing me to be blind in that Wyeth’s is why I tile a lot of my work tunnel vision because I’m literally seeing with one eye. By the time I reached senior year I had picked up the love of art again. I had taken 5years worth of art by the time I graduated and was headed to college. I did some modeling while in college. And played around with cameras not really good at it but you could obviously see I had an eye for art. Once I graduated and moved back to Texas in April of 2017 I decided hey why not try this out and take it seriously and see where it goes. So far my work has gotten so much better in such a short amount of time! Work has been seen on essence.com bearded bae edition. Seen in urban freedom magazine and so on.
I’m a Nikon Guy. I call myself TheNikonMamba! Yes it’s a spin off the black mamba (Kobe)! But right now I think I’ll stick to my Nikon d800e and use it until its stops working for me!
Right now the lens I use most is the Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 telephoto lens because I love the soft backgrounds but the clear crisp focus! However my Nikon 50mm 1.8 is my first lens and I love it! We have been through so much together.
I’m a self-taught photographer, I studied on YouTube and put myself around great photographers like Deveja Webb a close friend of mine and one of my main models and Manny Rodriguez someone I see as a mentor! I literally watch photography videos on YouTube everyday!
The main obstacle is finding clients! People always want the highest quality work but never want to pay for it. I set my price and I feel it’s pretty low for what I provide but you always get that person asking for a discount. I just want to get people to respect my work so much they don’t care the price.
Right now my favorite shoot is a window shoot that I did in my bed room of model: on IG @muhree0 (Taylor) it was so simple but elegant and as I call it simply sexy! It helped me move toward my style which I think will be extreme contrasted photos that show the curve of the body!
I don’t really take much influence from others work but I do admire people stuff. IG names: @marvinbienaime, @_djuice, @andrewthomasclifton, @fotomanny
Basically photographers that can really make melanin pop!
The most rewarding part of being a photographer is getting to see a woman’s eyes when she first sees her pictures after a shoot! The joy, excitement, passion, love, happiness, of seeing how beautiful she actually is. That is why I do this. That is what pushes me to do more and more photography and get better and better.
When I started out I wish I knew that lens were the most important part of the camera I would have save a lot of money! I would have been able to have a few really high quality lens right now. But the one I have is all I need for the time being.
My style is focused on the melanin of a black woman. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t work with other people but the part of photography that is specifically for me, is grounded in the skin of the black woman. The way she moves the way she talks, walks, her being! I love that I have the ability and responsibility to capture just a moment of her essence in a picture!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s not smooth, but it is worth it. The biggest struggle is getting people to understand this is my career not my hobby. I do this to provide for my family not to have fun on a Tuesday. People want the quality I provide but do not want to pay to price that comes with it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about ADC Photography – what should we know?
What makes me different? It is the experience you have when you shoot with me. It not just me taking a few good pictures of you but more of me bringing the best out of you. Me making sure you see yourself as the beautiful, amazing person that you are. I specialize in high contrasted images and melanin.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I give credit to all the people that took their time to work with me when I first started shooting. I was not the best be I was learning and providing the same great experience. I think them for giving me a chance to learn with them.
