Today we’d like to introduce you to Amorette Vargas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amorette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for the beauty industry began when I was three years old. My mom was a stay at home mom who sold Avon to friends and neighbors. I was obsessed with their little sample white tubes of lipstick. I had a purse full of them and offered them to ladies wherever we went.
When I was in 3rd grade, there was a career fair at school in the cafeteria. Each table set up had a different career option and we had to choose our favorite and write about why we chose that one. I remember writing something along the lines of “if you can have a career doing something that doesn’t feel like work, why wouldn’t you choose that?” I feel the exact same way today!!
I have been an Esthetician for over ten years. I graduated from Aveda Institute Dallas and began working in an Aveda spa right out of school. I wanted to continue to grow my skills as an esthetician, so I continued my education with laser school. After some time, Aveda reached out to me and offered me a work/study internship and I became an educator with the institute. After a while, I soon missed the work of performing services on clients and building those relationships, so I went back into working on clients. I became self-employed in 2017 and haven’t looked back ever since.
I’m a single mom, raising two teen boys on my own. I sometimes work ten hour days and most often, weekends. Yet, I wake up every day doing what I love most and working on some pretty amazing clients. I can’t imagine having any other career. When I talk to my boys about their hopes and dreams, I tell them there isn’t anything they can’t become or achieve. I encourage their passions and teach them success doesn’t always mean material wealth. I can only hope they are just as proud of me as I am to be their mother.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I remember working as an employee for a company who told me I wasn’t worth a raise often times because I didn’t sell enough of their product or work faster to bring in more clients than I was already seeing on any given day. I was burned out and running on fumes, physically and emotionally drained. I wanted to quit that job every single day.
The only thing that kept me going was my clients. I showed up every day for them. As a matter of fact, it was one of my clients who valued me so much, she told me “today, you’re quitting this job and I’m going to help you” Not only did she help me start my own business, but she has also become an esthetician and is running her very own suite!! I am so proud of her! I am ever so grateful for the day she walked into my life.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Waxing is my art and my gift. I started waxing when I was 18. My roommate at the time and I bought an at-home microwave wax kit and it was a disaster to say the least! I was determined to master the art of bikini waxing after that and enough practice made perfect. I was also determined to grow out and repair everyone’s 90’s eyebrows, starting with my own. When I was an esthetics student, everyone wanted to be my partner when we got to the wax portion of learning because they knew I had experience and wouldn’t be ripping their brows out!
I am most proud of being trusted by clients. They trust when they walk in my door, they will be completely taken care of without question. I listen to their needs and concerns. It’s a relationship built on trust. They trust when they send me a referral, their friends/family will be taken care of and I will do my absolute very best to keep their business once I have anyone on my table.
I feel what sets me apart from others is not only my experience and passion for what I do but how I treat my clients. You know that saying “shh..don’t tell the others, but you’re my favorite”? When a client is in my salon, it’s all about them. I’m completely focused on making sure they know just how important they are. They’re not just a number to me, they’re what makes my business every single day.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very creative child. I was an only child for 13 years, so I had to entertain myself. I was always (and still am) a very “Chatty Cathy”, never at a loss for words or conversation. So much so, I was constantly moved around in class so I wouldn’t distract other students! The arts were always my favorite in school because I didn’t have to sit at a desk and do work, the arts allowed me to be creative. Art, music, drill team and theatre were my favorite classes in school.
