Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Coffey and Amy Claro.
Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We met each other working in radio advertising years ago and always kept in touch once we both left. Years later, over Mexican food and our diet cokes (our two vices), we were chatting about wanting more time at home with kids, and having more control over our schedules. We came up with the idea to create a Facebook flash sale with jewelry. Fast forward two weeks and 10 products later, we launch Accessory Concierge on Facebook.
Everything blew out the first 10 minutes so we doubled down the next week…and it sold even faster. We ramped up to hundreds of products per week. We saw the writing on the wall when Facebook went public and quickly created a website, worried that things would change for flash sales. They did change, but we had a built-in audience of around 40,000 Facebook fans so the transition to website was quick and successful. Now, 5 1/2 years later, we have grown exponentially and as of this year, added in wholesale to the mix. We have since opened over 50 stores in 3 months.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Relatively speaking, it’s been quite smooth. We hire all moms, because hey, that mom schedule is why we started in the first place, never knowing it would go nuts. We have a team of people who make things click. We allow everyone to come in after they drop kids off and leave in time for pick up.
Of course, we have had struggles. Growing the inventory base without debt is challenging for any business, but we are navigating.
There is still a constant check on work/life balance. There are 5 kids between Amy and myself, and lots of “happenings” around that.
