Meet Amy Fornear of Posture Mind and Body Restoration

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Fornear.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up pain was everywhere and I wanted to fix it. My mom had chronic headaches and I learned that I could fix her pain with a glass of water and a massage. However, my Dad had funeral plans arranged as was diagnosed with 4th stage Metastatic Melanoma Skin Cancer. The cancer was quick. It spread to 13 different spots right before the doctor said he had days to live. However, God had a different plan as he stands today alive, 15 years cancer free.

These experiences inspired me to learn more about healing and what I could do to help. So, I moved from Dallas to Denton to study at the University of North Texas for my masters in counseling. I figured school would equip me to know what to do with all the pain.

Slowly, I discovered that classes and conversations don’t take away the pain, but the runners high did – at least for a bit. My daily college routine consisted of attempting to fix my friend’s problems and spend my afternoons numbing myself in the gym – running around the track over and over until I couldn’t feel anymore. After three years of this chaos, my body broke and through a series of events, I realized I can’t help people in pain by merely talking it out.

After graduating with my undergrad, I looked into massage therapy as a way of helping pain relief. After basic massage school, I continued education specializing in pain relief and posture restoration. I was introduced to a licensed massage therapist, who worked with Olympic trainers and midwives and practiced for 25+ years. She developed massage therapy techniques that helped one of my friend’s sense of smell and hearing back from a traumatic head injury. I was amazed. I shadowed her for 5 years and asked her a think a thousand questions. I saw the connection between the mind and body and fell in love with the design of the human body.

A few years later she hired me to be one of the massage instructors for her school. Now for the past six years, I do what I absolutely love: help people walk out of pain and teach other massage therapists how to do the same!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a 28-year-old single with tons of dreams and ideas including business, marriage and a family, I came home from attending the 19th millionth wedding of a friend and went to bed weeping. I wasn’t crying because I wasn’t in love yet. I was crying because I felt stuck doing everything I love to do with people I love being around. I loved my job and the relationships around me so much but still felt like something was missing.

That night, I fell asleep yelling out to God, “Do something!”

Two months later, I was on a walk in my neighborhood and got attacked by a dog. The 180 pound Central Asian Shepherd dog left a 3 by 5-inch gash near my elbow. Before surgery, the surgeon warned me that I may not feel in my fingers again. For recovery, I laid on the couch for 6 months not able to work or move like normal. I was scared to walk outside.

After months of physical therapy and painkillers, I still wasn’t getting the full range of motion in my arm without pain. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to massage again. I finally did what I would recommend anyone else with this issue – a massage. More specifically the massage therapy that I was taught. After the first session, I felt the blood run through the tissue for the first time in a long time and could move without pain!

This was an obstacle, but an absolute gift. The value of who I am didn’t change but the value of what I do increase even more. Now I can better understand my client’s trauma in their bodies and the battle of their minds during painful events and help them walk into the healthiest version of themselves.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Posture Mind and Body Restoration – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
