Meet Amy Gutknecht of Amy Lou Photography in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Gutknecht.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been envious of those that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life and what they wanted to be when they grew up. I always knew I wanted to be a wife and a mom. Beyond that, I kept searching for something else that I was truly passionate about. I went to court reporting school and worked for a couple of years as a freelance court reporter. As a career, court reporting was very good to me, but it was just a job. There was no passion, so to speak. I became a stay-at-home mom and loved it. I felt very fortunate to be able to stay at home with my kids, but I knew there was something more out there for me. I needed a creative outlet. I needed something that I could do for others.

I always loved photography, but it wasn’t until my mom passed away seven years ago that I realized how important pictures really are. Each and every picture became a prized possession. I found myself somewhat obsessed with taking pictures of the people I cared most about. My family and friends were so encouraging about the pictures I was taking and pushed me to turn this obsession of mine into a career. I started carrying my camera around with me everywhere. I was taking photography workshops and watching countless hours of YouTube to learn new techniques and skills. I gave away free sessions to everyone willing to be in front of my camera so that I could gain more experience and try new things. When I wasn’t taking pictures, I was busy teaching myself Lightroom and Photoshop as I continued to hone my editing skills.

Amy Lou Photography was made official in 2017. Every day, I’m learning something new about the profession, my gear and my style. While some aspects of my business are always changing, there are certain constants. Sunset sessions will always be my favorite. I love the challenge of capturing candid and genuine images of children. I’m very adamant about moms being present in pictures. Most importantly, I find the most joy in photographing sweet families.

My journey from court reporter to photographer has truly been a dream come true for me.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, things have gone smoothly. I didn’t take the decision lightly to go professional. It took me quite a while before I put myself out there. I wanted to be confident that I could offer my clients a service that was more than picking up a camera and snapping pictures. Any obstacles or challenges were tempered by the fact that I’m blessed with incredible support from my family and friends. Word of mouth has absolutely gotten me to where I am today. There really is a no bigger compliment than a referral.

Of course, there are still some struggles. My biggest struggle is comparing myself to others and doubting my abilities. I sometimes wonder if I’m good enough. There is so much incredible talent out there, especially in my area. I try to use that as motivation though. The incredible photographers surrounding me are ones that make me want to learn more and become even better at what I do.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a natural light photographer that specializes in families, children, and lifestyle newborn photography. My style is definitely more “moody and emotional” than “light and airy.” I’m always paying attention to the sunlight and lighting. My favorite time of day for a session is about an hour before sunset. I do love sunrise sessions, but it’s hard to talk anyone into that (understandably so.) I don’t typically use props with the exception of a quilted blanket or other simple items. I want to give my clients classic images that they will hang on their walls and never takedown.

I’m most proud of capturing moments in pictures that will last forever. My main goal is to provide my clients with the ability to look at an image and be transported back to that time/place. I’m proud of the friendships I have gained through this business. Almost all of my clients have become sweet friends. I get to help document such important moments in their lifetime – engagements, weddings, maternity, birth, milestones, and more. I am truly honored to capture and be a part of these special occasions.

This business has also provided me the opportunity to donate my time and talent to matters that mean a lot to me. I’m honored to have worked with Magic Hour Foundation, Carson’s Crusaders, the 9/11 Heroes Photography Event, my children’s school and other fundraisers. I really love giving back – there is no greater feeling.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I was born in Dallas and raised in Allen, Texas. I currently live in Frisco with my husband and three children. I love being a Texan. I really don’t know anything other than the North Texas area. I’ve been lucky to see other parts of our county and world, but I’ve always lived here. I’m willing to travel for the right location but have learned that there are so many great spots all around us. This area offers such favorable conditions and so much opportunity for growth, especially for small business owners. There are a lot of talented photographers in this area. Instead of being intimidated by this, make it work positively for you. I’ve learned so much from other photographers that I admire and look up to.
