Meet Amy McCarter of 3MaresDesign in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy McCarter.

Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started in the stable. I realized that I wanted a more user friendly bit hanger, a piece of tack that converts a halter into a bridle, to use on the trails. A bit hanger is a safer option than having a separate bridle and halter, as it removes the need to completely remove any tack items, so your horse is always secure. After I discovered this need I set off on making my own intuitive, aesthetically pleasing, and customizable bit hangers. Working so closely with leather, naturally I began delving into jewelry making, equine themed of course, as well as fabricating my own hardware for accessories and tack.

I secured a studio space in the D/FW area and got to work. Everything from eye- catching necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, to user friendly bit hangers, breast collars, and saddle bags. Creating these unique and inspiring pieces has enabled me to share part of myself with the equestrian community, and help others have a beautiful and easy way to express themselves from the barn breeze to the city lights.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle has been utilizing both sides of the brain: business and design. You name it. Licensing rights, trademarking, creating a website and striving to gain online presence in an already overly saturated accessories market, learning the proper steps to be able to sell globally such as shipping, GS1 codes, and UPC codes; all of these things are a small fraction of the necessary business knowledge I have had to acquire to work towards achieving success in my endeavors. These necessities were hardly anticipated, which made for a sharp learning curve. The taxing hours spent researching and implementing various business frameworks, took away from time in the design studio. Learning to balance both of these has been a journey in and of itself.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a lifelong horse lover and avid rider, I’ve had a chance to utilize various styles of riding gear. 3 Mares Design is a company that provides distinct, user friendly tack, in addition to eye-popping and unique accessories.

I had an epiphany about a year ago, and decided to take courses regarding what I was creating. In that context, I would say I am most proud of staying in the game, working towards perfection, and truly putting my heart and soul into my work, and the products which represent my company.

What sets 3 Mares Design apart from others, is the emphasis on creating pieces that are not only practical and easy to use, but also individually, intentionally, and insightfully designed.

What were you like growing up?
I was very loquacious growing up. In other words, I was a chatter-box. Coincidentally my love of talking coincided with my love of horses; in fact, the third word I ever spoke as a child was ‘horse’. I remember the first and only pony I had until adulthood was named Cricket, who I received in third grade for Christmas. He was not the easiest pony (what ponies are), but I loved him nonetheless. I drove my parents nuts with my love for all things equine. It has been my passion my entire life.
