Meet Amy Tate of Origins Birth and Wellness – Dallas in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Tate.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My experience with midwifery started when I was very young. I do not remember my own home birth but I remember my brothers, as well as so many since. My mother taught childbirth education classes for a midwife in Austin in the early 70’s and was a La Leche League Leader for most of my childhood. For as long as I can remember, birth has been a natural part of life. I’m a mother of four boys, all of whom were born naturally- two at home, and two at Baylor. After all of my personal experiences, I firmly believe that all women should have the birth they desire!

I’ve had the pleasure to support women since 1990 in many roles including as a doula, a birth assistant, a lactation counselor, and now, as a midwife. I began my midwifery training in 1990 but had to delay my education due to a grave family loss. My passion for birth never wavered and I was able to complete my training years later. In the interim, I grew many successful businesses and am now able to bring together my business knowledge and midwifery experience. My passion is to help each woman feel empowered through their birth experience.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was a challenge to go to school while working full time. It was also hard to leave a secure job to start my own business.

We had our baby at Origins last August and it was such an incredible experience. I always knew I wanted a natural birth if possible but I figured I would just have my baby at a hospital like everyone else. The more I learned about our hospital’s policies and procedures the more I felt like I was just a patient and not a person with the right to choose my own services! At the end of my 2nd trimester my husband I went to visit Origins and met Amy on a tour. We switched to the birth center right then and there and my husband and I both agree it was the best decision we ever made during my pregnancy.

Amy was always there for us. She actually listened to me and validated my concerns and my wishes. Whenever we came up to “problems” (like going past 41 weeks!) she would present all our options, offer up her experience and knowledge, but she always made it very clear that the choice was mine. I have never felt so empowered or truly cared for by a healthcare practitioner before. We cannot recommend Origins Birth Center or Amy enough – we just love all the staff and especially our sweet midwives!
