Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Patterson.
Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in 2011 at a tattoo shop in North Dallas. At the time, I was 22, working at Cici’s Pizza, and living at home with my family. I had gotten Tattooed there once and talked to one of the Artists about wanting to get into the industry, and all he could offer was advice because he was not the owner of the shop. But after asking a handful of other tattoo shops if they had an opening for an apprenticeship, I went back to the original tattooer, and he let me know he had bought the shop and was now the owner. I started riding the bus from my Cici’s job to the tattoo shop and would bring them pizza every day (or at least as often as I could) until I finally got offered an apprenticeship. And after a few years apprenticeship, I became an official tattooer in 2013. I ended up moving to Abilene, Texas, for a few years and tattooed at 2 different places, then moved back in 2015. I have since worked at 3 shops but have been with Lady Magnolia Tattoo for the past two and a half years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have certainly been highs and lows on my journey to where I am now. And I am very grateful for all of it. I’ve learned to set boundaries and stand up for myself, to be patient, and to always be open to listen. I think some of the biggest struggles have been because of my severe depression and trying to be the best I can be for my coworkers and clients. Over time, I have learned what physically and emotionally put me in the best place for success, but that has been a very long road.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a tattoo artist and have been tattooing around the Dallas area for 11 years. I have a wide range, but I would say my specialties are neo-traditional, traditional, bright and colorful, glitter, black and gray, and fine line/illustrative. I think what sets me apart aside from my work is that I am very patient and easy to work with. I love making people feel more comfortable in their skin and want to create unique and beautiful art as well as a comfy cozy experience.
Any big plans?
There are not any particular plans at the moment, but I’ve always considered opening my own shop down the line. But as far as right now, the only plans are to continue to grow and improve my craft.
