Meet Angel Onuoha of BLK Capital Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Onuoha.

Angel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a freshman at Harvard, I realized that some of the finance organizations were lacking in diversity and so I decided to start BLK Capital Management. This was because I wanted to provide an opportunity for African-American students to learn about finance in an environment in which they felt comfortable. Today we have grown to students at over 60 schools nationwide with $100,000 in assets under management.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle that we had was getting the first sponsor and students on board. However, once we started to gain traction, it was a lot easier to continue the organization.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the BLK Capital Management story.
BLK Capital Management is a 100% black owned and student run hedge fund that focuses on educating black students in financial literacy and investing. We focus on education, mentorship, and pre-professionalism. On the education side, we teach students how to invest in the market by deploying $100,000 with a long/short strategy. For mentorship and pre-professionalism, we partner with large institutions on Wall Street such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley who help us run the program and look for students in our program for job and internship opportunities. As a company, we are most proud of being able to provide financial education to students who wouldn’t have access to it. What sets us apart is that we have a specific focus on African-American college students.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
If nothing is changed, the medium wealth of an African-American family will continue to decline. This is why we believe it is imperative to teach financial literacy to our communities at a young age, medium wealth of an African-American family will continue to decline.
