Meet Angela Culver of In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center in Wylie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Culver, Media Director at In-Sync Exotics.

Angela, please kick things off for us.  We’d love to hear the story of how it all began.
Vicky used to be a vet tech at a local veterinarian’s office. One day, someone brought in a cougar for treatment. The doctor treated the cat, but the owners never came to pick the cougar back up. So, rather than letting the cat be euthanized, Vicky went through all of the hoops and red tape to be able to legally and responsibly care for the cat herself. One rescued cougar turned into two rescued cougars, then the USDA asked her to take in a tiger, and in 2000, In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center was born. Now, here we are, 76 cats strong. In-Sync Exotics takes in exotic cats that are unwanted, abused, neglected, and other people consider trash. We don’t care how old, how sick, how undesirable, when we rescue a cat it is for the rest of its life. We do anything and everything possible to provide the absolute best of care for each and every animal at the sanctuary. This includes housing, nutrition, supplements, veterinary care, enrichment, and lots of people who consistently go far above and beyond to give these cats the best care they can possibly give.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any time you take on a project of this scope, there are always obstacles. Growing from a sanctuary of three cats to 76 has seen a dramatic increase in the need for space, volunteers, and vital funds. We rely solely on the generosity of private donors and a few grants, so making sure we have enough money to be able to feed and care for the cats is always on our minds.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center – what should we know?
In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center rescues abused, unwanted, and neglected exotic felines. We are committed to providing the absolute best care possible for each and every cat we rescue. Once they come to live at In-Sync, that’s where they remain for the rest of their lives. We do not breed, sell, or allow direct contact between the animals and the public. This sets us apart from a lot of other places who claim to be sanctuaries, but by their practices of breeding, selling, or allowing the general public to “pay to play”, obviously do not have the best interest of the cats in mind. We are highly proud of the compliments we receive regularly as to the cleanliness of the facility as well as how relaxed and happy all of the cats are.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All of our supporters and donors are truly amazing. We absolutely could not do this without all of their generosity.

The more you learn about this organization, the more you realize just how incredible and special it is. The cats are amazing and the people just as much so. There are very, very, few paid staff positions (and they could easily work elsewhere at much higher salaries) and there almost 150 volunteers. Even with all that volunteer labor it takes a tremendous amount of funds for feeding and medical care. This a non-profit 501C3 group, so all donations are tax-deductible (even when you visit, your entry “donation” is tax deductible). Anything you can give monetarily would be greatly appreciated (see the insyncexotics.org website for how to donate). There is also always a wish list for the cats and the sanctuary, so if you can’t give monetarily, perhaps you can help with the wish list. If you haven’t been there, come on out, it’s a great family experience! Thank you Angela and Voyage Dallas for a great article — education and awareness, as in all causes, are the key to success!
