Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hines.
Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Texas about six years ago and had to go through the process of getting my Texas teaching certification. While spending a year doing so, I depended on my other skills as a manicurist and personal trainer to be my income. During that time at the salon, I noticed how hotels would call to see if the manicurist would come there and provide services. Once I obtained my Texas teaching certification, I began teaching but continued to do nails and personal train on the side. I love teaching, however, I loved helping and serving people as well.
I started Sheacures when I noticed how the on-demand services were becoming extremely popular. Clients often ask if I would come to them especially if they were unable to leave due to injury, pregnancy or the such. It began with just me, using all of my gifts as a way to supplement my teaching income. However, it is growing daily allowing me to employ other independent contractors.
I am a licensed manicurist educator of 25 plus years, certified elementary teacher and certified personal trainer of 18+ years. Sheacures is a mobile nail, personal training and spray tanning business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been very rough. Being in business for yourself means you wear every single hat there is and you take every complaint personally. Luckily, I have not had any complaints. One of the hardest things I have come to learn is that person to person is way more effective than online connections. Considering I am in the service industry, it was on thing to advertise online, but being that mouthpiece wherever I went worked way better. Another struggle is obtaining quality help. You know how you want to run your business and the level of care you give it. But not everyone will do the same. I also had to realize that some people are meant to work for others and some, like me, have crazy potential to do it on their own. I have had to embrace both when considering assistance with Sheacures.
The last struggle is adequate legal counsel within my scope of practice. Getting all the necessary documentation to be successful has been a days work within itself. This was a major deal, because who wants to work hard to only pay taxes.
Please tell us about Sheacures.
Sheacures is a mobile, on-demand nail, personal training and spray tanning business. We go to homes, hospitals, offices, hotels and more and provide the aforementioned services. I specialize in all of them. I am not just a manicurist, but also a licensed educator (meaning I teach other manicurists). I have competed in bodybuilding, therefore, I am well versed in physique transformations and I have airbrushed everything for cars, clothes, sneakers to bodies. Not to mention, being a certified school teacher I am wonderful at educating others and program designing, I am often asked, “What don’t you do?’
As a company, I am most proud of just starting it and taking the jump. I have always provided quality service and to be able to be that person to also provide convenience and comfort, makes me sleep very well at night.
My ability to read a situation and respond accordingly sets me apart. Even though I go into the home and provide a service, I know I am doing just that. Therefore, I read the client and if they want to relax, I stay quiet, but if they are looking for guidance and conversation I do that as well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start this venture over, I would have done more in-person organic advertising first.
