Today we’d like to introduce you to Angele Taylor.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We first started December of 2017–yes we just got started in this business of sharing our recipe with the world. However, our pie recipes are as old as your great-great-grandmother. We would visit our grandmother on Saturday mornings to help her peel sweet potatoes so we could enjoy a batch of delicious pies every Sunday for our family dinner after church. Our Grandma May made big dinners for us every Sunday and the whole family would trickle in one by one to fix a plate with a slice of cake or pie. This is a tradition for the Roberson Family.
As years have gone by, we would enter our Grandma’s pie in baking contests and bring them to work for spreads. The pies had a reputation of their own and always ended on top of the rest. We are not a fan of the nutmeg spice, so our pies were just different – in the best way! Rave reviews follow every single time, even from the judges of the contests. One judge saw me taking the pie away after judging and flat out asked me if she could have the pie for herself! I happily agreed and realized that my family has a gem that we should share with others.
May Pie was born soon afterwards, and we have been surprising ourselves with $1,000 in sales the first 3 weeks of business! We are a home-based business, but our Master Baker, Mornia Roberson (Grandma May’s only daughter) has a regular baking schedule to accommodate the ongoing orders we get in throughout the week from our website, ilovemaypie.com!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is a red tape with any business, and selling perishable items is no different. In fact, because we stay away from preservatives and these pies are homemade, it makes it that much more difficult to make these pies in bulk so they are made fresh daily by our master baker and if you order them for a corporate event, don’t be surprised if they are still warm from the oven!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with May Pie – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We have a pie making family business that specializes in homemade southern baked pies with a recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation. What sets us apart from other companies is that our pies are truly made the same way we serve it to our family – with nothing more and nothing less. Less is more, so we leave out strong spices and keep it simple with a consistent taste every time.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
May Pie’s future plans are to renovate a building we own in Dallas and build out a commercial kitchen and pickup location for our business. We will have our commercial kitchen by the end of the year and also a contract for shipping our pies throughout the United States.
