Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Walker.
Angelica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved baking since I was pretty young. I started out baking for family and friends. I would make different cake and cookies for family birthday parties. I’ve always gotten great feedback, so I decided to take the advice of those around me and started to sell my baked goods. When brainstorming a name, I thought about the nicknames my grandmother had for us, and mine just so happened to be Cakey. So, I guess subconsciously, I wanted to live up to that name. That is how Cakey’s Cakes, Cookies, and Creations came to be. I’ve been working on getting my name out there with the help of my younger sister Bree. She has been helping me get my name out there on social media and building up clientele. I’ve been going to different Farmer’s Markets on a larger scale and having the opportunity to network with other small business in the process. So far, the efforts have been fruitful, and in the future, I would like to expand to having an actual bakery and be able to serve the DFW area.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some obstacles. I have a 4-year-old son, a 1-year-old girl who are both very strong-willed and love cookies. As a stay-at-home mom, I thought it would be easier to start doing this since I had the time, but simply keeping the kids out the kitchen is a feat on its own. When I have to bring the kids along to markets or to drop off orders, it can be a challenge getting out the door. But with the help of my husband and having my parent’s support, who live nearby, it can help ease some of the stress.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cakey’s Creations offers delectable items, including cakes, cookies, cookie cakes, and other various treats. My specialty items are my cookies with my most popular including Cherry Cookies and Cream and Double Chocolate Dream. What sets Cakey’s apart is our personal-sized cookie cakes, which is one of our items we find to be the most unique. Customers also have the opportunity to have custom creations at a reasonable price point. Cakey’s is also a black, female-owned small business who handles every customer with care because, although we love new customers, we love to see previous customers come back for more.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Keep pushing and experimenting with your recipes until you find something that you love and can be proud of. It’s okay to be a bit of a perfectionist. If you’re nervous about getting started, don’t let fear stop you! You may be surprised about the feedback you get. Personally, I wish someone had told me the importance of taking good pictures of all your creations. I had some trouble when I first started my social media finding good photos that were taken in good lighting. Make sure to have documentation of all your previous work to show to new customers.
