Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Mays.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been creating art since I was five years old and it has definitely been one of the most exciting and interesting journeys of my life. I would have never thought I would have a fully operating company doing what I loved. In college, I was an art major but changed my major to business after I didn’t think I was good enough to pursue a career as a visual artist. After eight years of not doing any kind of art, I returned to my passion and attempted to create again only to find that my skill had grown tremendously. I was never a painter in the beginning… My specialty was realism using graphite pencil. Using color in any medium especially paint was always extemely intimidating. Therefore, when I returned to creating art I found that my skill has grown and painting became second nature to me. There is where my story begins to unfold… Though it is the name of my company, Eighty 8 Lines was created from my journey as an artist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t describe the journey as a “smooth road” at all, as with anything, I have faced many challenges along the way. One of the biggest challenges has been staying encouraged in my weakest moments — those times when I felt defeated by the workload of running the company when my business seemed to be chaotic. I wanted to give up. I began to second guess my decision to go into business as a full-time artist. However, it was an echo in my mind that posed a reminder of “why you do, what you do, and who you do it for”. My ultimate goal has always been to reach others through a lane I knew very well, creativity through visual arts.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Eighty 8 Lines story. Tell us more about it.
I am a passionate philanthropist and visual artist that specializes in acrylics with an art medium range from graphite to mixed media. My works have been exhibited at art galleries and studios throughout Texas and Louisiana. My style has been praised most for eccentric and psychedelic influences. I pay homage to the past and draw inspiration from Pop, Abstract, and Realism genres.
Eighty 8 Lines is an art company that specializes in art entertainment for all ages, murals, custom artwork, and giving back to the community.
I am very passionate about giving youth a place to create. I have 15 years of combined experience as a youth advocate working in education and non-profit programs. Through Eighty 8 Lines, we also facilitate 88L Scribbles, an educational art program designed for youth ages 2-18.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, to be completely honest I don’t believe in luck; however, I do believe in purpose. Therefore, I strongly believe what is meant for you is meant for you and no obstacle or challenge can stop it from happening. Through my business, I trust that I am flowing in the primary purpose of my life which is to motivate, educate, and inspire others through art.
