Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna and Benson Phillips.
Anna and Benson, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband of 27 years and our four boys ages 15-23 love being in the outdoors and have spent a lot of time vacationing in cabins. Our story started about seven years ago when stayed in a luxury log cabin while on vacation in southeast Oklahoma and had such an enjoyable time that we began to dream about building our log cabin someday. Our intention and hope were to not only relax and unwind in our secluded cabin but also to supplement our income and to financially give to others in need.
In 2015, we started looking for heavily wooded land to purchase within proximity of the DFW metroplex. After an exhaustive search, we purchased a hidden forest just 45 minutes east of Dallas in March 2016. While we encountered numerous obstacles and roadblocks along the way, the Lord sustained us and ultimately carried us through to completion in August 2017.
Our cabins offer everything you need to relax, unwind and recharge. They are private and secluded and boast of rustic elegance and charm that is unmatched in the area. Our luxurious cabins are the perfect place to spend your honeymoon, celebrate your anniversary or birthday or simply to escape the hustle and bustle of city life with friends. My husband and I treasure our times of escape to reconnect, and we encourage you all to do the same!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. We believe it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance as well as the Lord’s blessing to build something worthwhile. Our experience with the first builder was a difficult one and he left one of the cabins unfinished. It was stressful and exhausting but we got through. My husband, as well as family and friends, spent countless hours finishing the second cabin. When we decided to build our third cabin, we spent a lot of time finding the right builder and we are pleased with his quality of work and professionalism. He is now building our fourth cabin, a treehouse cabin.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Hackberry Creek Getaways is a family-owned vacation rental company. We have 22 acres of heavily wooded land with three log cabins that we designed and built. We are in the process of building our fourth cabin, a treehouse cabin. We also have a 1-acre pond stocked full of fish and a 3/4 mile walking trail through our property. Our cabins have hot tubs and porch bed swings as well as privacy and seclusion. Our cabins are over 250 feet apart with thick brush and trees between them. Many guests comment on how they felt like the only ones on the property. We feel like the short drive from Dallas to a luxury log cabin in the woods sets us apart from any other cabin experience.
We used to drive three plus hours to Southeast Oklahoma and found out the majority of the guests were from Texas. There is no other cabin experience close to Dallas like ours. We love our guests and the majority of them are repeat guests. We pay attention to detail and are continually improving our property and cabins. We offer a romance package with roses decorated on the bed as well as other details for a truly magical experience. Our whole family has put a lot of time and effort into creating such a special getaway and we are thankful we can share it with others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Northern Virginia (Anna) so I loved hiking and playing in the woods. Our family often went camping and those family times out in nature are some of my favorite memories. We loved to sit around the campfire roasting marshmallows, talking, telling stories, and enjoying family time.
