Today we’d like to introduce you to Annah Rae Covert.
Annah is a collaborative two-part writing team composed of a mother/daughter partnership. Rebecca and Savannah Covert are passionate about writing and since two heads are better than one: Annah Rae was born. They are debuting the first installment of the Grounded Trilogy: Hollow Ground, in fall 2018.
They were called to this journey early January of 2018. What made the call so demanding was their need to share their own experiences and to create relatable characters that deal with mental illness as a focal point of the story and not just a comedic relief. As a writing duo, they specialize in psychological thrillers. Mystery suspense books have always been one of their favorite genres to read so it made sense for them to create a psychological thriller. They have woven their own stories and struggles with mental illness into the fabric of the novel. So many people of all ages struggle everyday with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, addictions, self-harming behaviors, and overwhelming generalized fear. Their goal was to create a character that people, who aren’t represented, could see themselves in.
They love writing together, it has brought them so much closer! But what truly makes everything worth the work, blood, sweat and tears that they poured into their creation is the hope that someone will see them self in the characters and know that it’s okay to not be okay.
Addiction, anxiety, depression, self-harm, body dysmorphia, schizophrenia, and BPD have all struck their family hard. They know their stories were given to them for the purpose of telling them to others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Everyday has its own milestone. This novel has been an emotional roller-coaster for us. Some of the scenes are hard to write because they are so emotionally draining and will bring up emotions that are rough! Besides the personal scenes, there is the fact that we live an hour apart. We have spent countless hours discussing each chapter and each character. We call each other on our commute to work, on our lunch hour and every evening. We build on each other’s ideas and it has really helped in the creative process on this project. Of course it’s hard to get the word out, no one knows us yet and it takes time to build trust with an audience.
We both work full-time. Rebecca works as an Executive Director for an Alzheimer and Dementia care community and Savannah is completing her residency in North Richland Hills, Texas and will soon graduate with her Doctorate in Audiology from the University of North Texas. Making time to write is a priority for us. It would have to be or else it would have never got done!
Luckily, we have a great support team. Most of the nights we sat on the floor in the living room and discussed the book, our other family members made comments and suggestions.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Annah Rae Covert story. Tell us more about the business.
We wrote this trilogy with complete trust in each other and honesty. We crafted each scene together and developed the characters together with the same goal in mind. It’s truly been the best year of our life and it’s not over yet! Our favorite part of the novel is the fact that we were able to incorporate some of our poetry throughout the novel. We feel like it’s an addition to the novel that otherwise would be incomplete.
Here is the back of the book excerpt:
Leave now or you will die like your father.
Ten years after her father’s death in a horrific car accident, Ryan returns to East Texas to mend her relationship with her mother, only to be blindsided by her callous indifference.
Ignoring the pain of rejection, Ryan navigates her new life in college, her new roommates, and her new therapist. Her nightmares and anxiety attacks are more prevalent than ever and now her therapist insists on more aggressive treatments to combat the debilitating symptoms caused by her repressed memories.
A run on the campus trails turns catastrophic and her worst nightmares become reality. Threatening letters start to flow in. Someone wants her to leave. With an unknown force stalking her every move and her mental illness at its worst, Ryan can’t trust anyone, least of all herself. The attacks are escalating and the only one who has the answers that Ryan needs is nowhere to be found.
On a journey to know who she is, she discovers that everything she thinks she knows, is a lie.
It’ll go on preorder soon, subscribe to our website and social media to keep up to date with our date 🙂
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
First of all, shout out to our huge support team! Our whole family has been such an amazing part of this process! So many of our family members have stepped up to beta-read, help edit, and provide moral support (the most important and needed).
Dan, Rebecca’s husband (Savannah’s dad) even had input on some of the scenes (we didn’t use any of the ridiculous character traits he suggested though) that he could lend his expert advice in, since he used to work as a state patrolmen. One of his suggestions for a character trait was a random, spastic hand clap. Literally, just a random hand clap. His demonstrations were priceless! Honestly, we don’t know where that came from?
We are lucky that we get to write about our experiences. It brought us closer together and we have the privilege of sharing our stories.
