Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Hill.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a young girl, I was inspired by my grandmother who was a Buyer for Dayton Hudson. I always knew I wanted a career in retail. I received a Bachelors Degree in Consumer Studies from UMass Amherst. After college, I moved to NYC to work for Bloomingdales. I’ve since worked for numerous retail companies such as Aeropostale, Disney, Abercrombie and Fitch, HSN, JCP and now eBay. My retail career has spanned being a buyer, a planner, and a Director of e-commerce. Currently, I’m a Sr Category Manager for eBay. I’m fortunate to work remotely from my home in North Dallas. Being a single mom of 2, that helps a lot! In my role now I run the business strategies for the Musical Instruments categories on eBay. I’m fortunate to attend some fun trade shows and meet a lot of really cool people. My career has allowed me to see the world, I’ve traveled all over Europe and Asia and the US to visit factories, vendors, and see various trade shows or fashion shows.
Has it been a smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles for me has been the moves I’ve made. I grew up in Boston, moved to NYC, then Orlando, then Columbus, then Tampa, then to Dallas seven years ago. I’ve made great friends along the way and it’s hard to leave the great people you meet. But luckily with social media and all my travels, I manage to stay in touch with them. Also as I mentioned, I’m a single mom. And have been for 6+ years now. All the struggles of balancing work and life and school and activities etc. are real! I think It’s important for my kids to see how hard I work and how successful you can be if you are strategic in the career moves you make. It’s a huge life lesson I believe.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the eBay story. Tell us more about the business.
I work for eBay. I love meeting with the smaller sellers that make their livelihood off of selling on eBay. It’s a unique opportunity to bring together sellers and buyers and give them the marketplace to connect on.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The e-commerce space is changing and growing rapidly. More transactions are happening from smartphones now. It’s amazing to watch the retail landscape evolve and change.
