Today we’d like to introduce you to April Conkel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been working as an aesthetician for about 3 1/2 years. At the beginning of my career, I started as a skin care specialist. After doing that for about a year or so I decided I wanted to explore a different avenue with my license. I had always had an interest in doing lash extensions. It seemed like a good challenge and a great area to grow in and at this time, the lash industry was still very new. I went on to work for an employer for about a year before I decided that I wanted to grow not only in my craft but personally. It was not an easy decision, but I am glad I took the risk. I have been running ALashBeauty for a year now and it had truly been the best decision I have ever made.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is really no manual on how to start a successful business and it has its challenges. From an outside perspective, it looks very simple but there is a lot of time money and long hours that are put into starting a business and operating it successfully. Going into it, I knew that it was not going to be easy. I worried as to whether my business would survive… And at the beginning, I had no clients, so it really was a challenge to learn how to market myself in order to gain prospective clients. When I entered the industry as a lash business owner, the community was completely saturated with a bunch of amazing talented lash artists. I was also behind on the new techniques people were using. It took a lot of practice and time to get up to speed with everyone else. There were many times I struggled with confidence and making my presence known in this ever-growing industry.
At that point, I kind of knew that I had to do something that would set myself apart from everyone else and for me, that was providing exceptional quality client care. It really took a lot of faith in a lot of trust in God to know that my business was going to survive. Eventually started to see my business flourish. I had a steady flow of clientele and was gaining new clients weekly. All these things did not happen overnight or in a matter of weeks, but eventually I gained an understanding enough understanding to operate my business successfully.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ALashBeauty story. Tell us more about the business.
ALashBeauty solely focuses on providing lash extension services. All my sets range from natural to dramatic. The two most popular sets that I offer are hybrid and volume. Are use what do you watch community calls handmade fans using the pinching technique. I use what the community calls “handmade fans” using the pinching technique. This allows me to create dark and fluffy lashes without ruining the integrity of the natural lash. My goal inside and out of the studio is to make my clients feel cared for and beautiful. It was and is important for me to make my clients feel comfortable and confident coming to me with questions, issues, or schedule changes. There are other artists in the industry set strict boundaries and guidelines, but I really wanted my customer service to be the one thing that set me apart. There are many times where I have worked a later to get a client in, or I came in on my day off because it was the only time it worked with their schedule. I have answered messages midnight to answer any questions or get them scheduled. I want all my clients that walk into my studio and receive a service to know that I dedicated to serving them in the best way possible. I am honored to serve the women of Parker County and extremely grateful that they trust me to make them feel and look their best with a beautiful set of lashes.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Next year the lash industry is projected to become $1 billion industry so I definitely believe that in the next 5 to 10 years, it’ll grow to become $1 trillion industry. I definitely think that you’ll see a lot newer techniques, more in-depth training and more state regulation over lash extensions. It really is an ever-growing industry and it’s only going to keep growing. People are always looking for the next best thing especially in the beauty industry and I have no doubt that it is the same with lash extensions. Products and services will only get better.
