Today we’d like to introduce you to Artis Edwards.
Hi Artis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Texas-born and raised Hip Hop artist who prides himself in making music that people can relate to. I began rapping at the young age of 12, idolizing Hip Hop legends such as Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, Nas, MF DOOM, Snoop, and Biggie Smalls.
I started rough just keeping it simple, recording on a basic Sony tape recorder with a few friends from my neighborhood; I realized my natural gift for rapping by complete accident I just wanted to tell how I felt can be heard an it seem most people would only listen when I was rappin Upon my discovery I shifted gears and began exploring the music business on a more serious note. Not long after seeing the effects of my environment, I decided I wanted to learn more, so I then enrolled in the Music Technology Recording Arts program at Foothill Community College. TPT gained a lot of inspiration in his Songwriters’ workshop course taught by Veteran songwriter Jim Bruno. As well as I learned about music production in my “Producing in a Home Studio taught by Bruce Tambling I’m actually still in school now learning everything about music from History to composing, even taking an interest in Mozart and Beethoven.
I’m currently recording from my own studio and outsourcing mixing. I work with legendary engineers such as Chris Athens. He worked on my song Dear Momma and has credits with amazing artist such as Drake, Rick Ross, Ghostface, and the list goes on. I also work with IRKO who worked on quite a few of my songs. The main one out now is Called Outside FT Tflasha & Brxnt. He has credits with Jay Z, Lil Baby, Andre 3000, Ye, and many more. I’ve also worked with Dereck Garcia. My personal engineers are Brent Carter and CWalka. They bring my mixes to life! Outside of my home studio, I love using Spitshine Studios, owned by Russ Pickman of Austin, Texas as well as LitUpAv Studios owned by Christopher Loke in Garfield, Texas.
I’ve performed at multiple venues including Spinner’s Live, Ponderosa, and Austin Lounge. In 2014 I opened for Rap superstar Trina and Juvenile in 2012 (links Below). I have recorded over 40 full-length unreleased albums averaging about 12-22 songs each. I work with multiple Texas artist including released & unreleased HHP, Yung Green, Redd Turner, Mr. Supaman Mainstream, Vondoom, Blockboys, Brick Boys, T-flasha’, RJ Main C Frank Brxnt, CWalka, Ap, MC Honey, J Soulja, XYZ(Meet Sims), Naila, GSmith, Kydd Jones, Slo Boogy, D2, Int Scoot, DubFresh, One2Cee, Anya, Hyder, US, and the list goes on. as I work with a variety of beat makers such as Beezy Beats, TY Beats, Dj RadioHead (Canada), 5star beats, the amazing Beanz N Kornbread (Houston Tx), Super Mario Beats, and most recently Elduets and many more.
I have also released multiple music videos across YouTube. Thanks to the amazing Matthew Markoff, I have acquired exclusive verses from Grammy-winning Mainstream artist such as The Game, Future, Snoop Dogg, Royce Da 5’9, Killah Priest, Canibus, M80. My newest single Shottas ft Lil Wayne & Cwalka is available on multiple streaming platforms. I have many more I just I have release recently including a future with the legendary Edidon From Tupac’s legendary group, The Outlawz.
I’ve made all these moves as an independent artist and earned every dime legitimately, so don’t let people tell you that you can’t do great things, regardless of your status. I don’t just mean as an underground artist, but I mean from poverty, the bottom, that’s where I’m from.
I’ve expanded my network by working on a project that educate people on cryptocurrency. Many of these projects will be released 2023-2024 with my bro Larron Armstead of Serum Records and an up & coming crypto coin that will be named when the project drops. They sponsored a couple of the major features I’ve mentioned above and have assisted me with funding equipment for my personal studio. My drive to work with them is because they wanted to make a one-of-a-kind project to introduce the world to some groundbreaking and life-changing innervations in a growing tech field; one that has implications that could change the world for the better. So, shout out the Serum Family.
I’m currently creating an urban anime and NFT JPRG Game that will be playable with cash or cryptocurrency. It will be available on multiple consoles and mobile devices. I currently have demos available for android customers.
I am in the process of producing a show that taps into the truth in life. No gossip of false facts, just news and important topics that will help and educate those of all ages. The web series, Real Talk will launch fully in 2023 featuring costars TPT (the puppet) and Yellow Mask.
I have also been periodically filming for my Docu-Series, Making Real Music. This will be where you get a behind look at how I make the music and what it’s like to me an up-and-coming artist. The show is raw and holds no punches. The ultimate goal is to pitch it to multiple media platforms, such at Netflix for example.
I hate talking about the DNA of my creation, but I wanted to drive home the point. I along with the people I’m working with, have some amazing things coming to the world. We are tapping into just about every entertainment field. We are not just music artist, we are innovators. I believe it will have a long-lasting, positive impact with the message in each project I have coming soon. Huge shout out the amazing animators responsible for my animated videos, album, and single covers. You’ll get peeks of via this interview. Ig: Supermegadopeydope, Dre Parson, Dotnova, Ari, and many more.
In closing, I want to thank Voyage Dallas Magazine for the opportunity to share my craft and vision. I hope with this when you see anything associated with TPT, you will know that it will be something innovative and inspiring. Hopefully, this will inspire someone else to keep going. Don’t give up. It is possible! You can do I did.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a crazy road! When you are not pushing the predetermined narrative of selling drugs, do drugs, sex, or whatever else they expect of you, it can be difficult at times. Seems like if the narrative is derogatory, they don’t want to hear you. I’m trying to change that. I want to speak the truth. I want to make music they can feel. Music that you can play for the elders and the children.
I’ve lived a lot those aspects of life but don’t make it 100% of my catalog. At the end of the day, I want heal more than I damage. I want to make amazing music and have my voice heard outside this trap. So, I keep going, I don’t give up. Covid messed out a lot of opportunities. My family lost our 1st home in the Texas Winter Storm and still the hustle is amazing. Regardless I make amazing moves and products. We keep moving forward. I don’t like to give much energy to the negative, besides throughout the storms, God has blessed tremendously. I make my music around life, real everyday life. You have to muscle your way out of challenges. Even when it seems like you can’t do anything else, the world doesn’t care about excuses, only the results. I think when you find your thing in this life, your purpose, it’s clear as day why you must fight your way out. I have an amazing family. My wife and kids, sisters and brothers, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephew, I know they are watching me, and they are my motivation. With them pushing me and God lifting me, I know that I will not fail.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As you can tell already, I love music!!! I love making songs that people feel. That good stuff that makes your head nod, riding music if you will. I love to give the youth something they can look at and know that they can be what they want to. Rather it’s my music, my anime games, or even my talk show, I want to create what will become a household name. Something that says yes, you can go to college, you can be great. You don’t fold to what this world expects of you. I’m known in general for being truthful, honest, and real. I love and speak life into my people.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The most surprising thing about me honestly is that I love the movie “The Gambler” with Kenny Rogers as well as the song that goes with it. lol I’M JUST SAYIN IT FIRE!!!
