Meet Ashia Mosley of Ashia Mosley Photography in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashia Mosley.

Ashia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From a young age, I was always so interested in photography and film. I remember sitting in front of my TV daydreaming about the “behind-the-scenes” aspect of my favorite movies and talking my sister’s ear off about how cool it would be to stand there and just watch.

We’re all asked the cliche question of, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, yet I never really knew the answer. I thought maybe a teacher or an artist or even a violinist who helped make movie scores (are you catching the recurring theme? haha). All I knew was I wanted to be a part of something big and a little unconventional.

It was a Sunday morning and little 6th-grade Ashia was sitting in the middle school church service. Week after week, they would play a short clip about joining the media team and each time, I would feel a little tug on my heart. I was so captivated by the other students sitting in the booth or standing behind the camera and I would watch the screens as they cut back and forth between shots.

I finally felt God whisper to me, “Don’t be afraid. Just go for it!”, and the rest is history.

My passion grew into wedding photography + videography after shooting/editing my first wedding my junior year of high school. At that moment, I knew in my heart this was my calling, which might be a little unusual as a high schooler. It was hard to be taken seriously about becoming a photographer for a living, but I have worked my booty off every single day knowing God could do the impossible. Throughout college, I was booking as many shots and weddings as I could while working toward my degree in Radio, Television, and Film from The University of North Texas. Now, I’m 22 years old working a full-time job in Dallas, TX, and growing my photography business in between. I’m in love with what I do and can’t wait to see where my business will be in the next year!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no! I think starting anything from scratch is going to be bumpy, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things. I am very blessed to have had some amazing opportunities lined up for me before I even knew they were coming, which made the process a lot smoother.

One of the biggest struggles for me was moving to Dallas for school, now work, when almost all my relationships are in San Antonio. It really forced me to make new connections up here, and learn how to balance doing shoots back home on top of my priories with school and work.

The second biggest struggles were teaching myself everything I needed to know about the photography + videography business, minus a few things. I’ve been my own mentor — watching YouTube videos, asking questions when I could — but I know it’s all a big learning process. It’s all about making the right connections and surrounding myself with like-minded people that want to watch me succeed!

Ashia Mosley Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I own a photography + videography business that specializes in weddings, portraits, bridals, and engagements. I am currently based in DFW, but book shoots in San Antonio as well!

Although I’m still fairly new to the industry, I think I am most proud of my drive and motivation to make this dream a reality. Considering I practically work two jobs — my “big girl job”, as I like to call it, and my photography business — the amount of dedication, passion, and growth I have achieved within a short period of time, I think, is pretty amazing.

I strive to make your session experience comfortable, fun, and something that allows you to truly express yourself! I absolutely love meeting & loving on people, so I can’t wait to work with you!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would have to say finally proving this crazy dream of mine is actually becoming a reality. It was proving to myself I could actually do it and prove to my friends and family that I could be successful with it. I still have a long way to go, but the fire within me hasn’t ceased and I’m not letting it burn out!
