Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Stevenson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2014, I woke up to my apartment in flames and essentially lost everything. Luckily, I didn’t lose my life and found my desire to create something. I started a walking food tour company called Foodie Foot Tours. This was my way of bringing my blog to life and sharing my dining experiences with others.
Through that journey, I realized that my tour only shared something locally and I wanted to have a much bigger footprint with whatever I did. Similar to the food tour in helping people explore something different with their tastebuds, The Adventurous Bartender was created to help people explore the world of spirits and the art of bartending.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a business was not easy and creating a physical product has been even harder. With my food tour, I rely on other operating businesses to help create experiences but with this game, I had to rely solely on myself. I couldn’t afford a consultant to do the research and work for me. I had to research manufacturing, which was my biggest challenge. I went from buying dice at a local craft store, which was expensive for the amount I needed, to finding a manufacturer who could handle a bulk order. The process of engraving was another challenge. I tried to teach myself how to use certain tools and even took a class on engraving but it was too much for me to handle on my own. I eventually found a local company to do engraving, but at a price of $35 for a set, I couldn’t afford that forever. Luckily, my manufacturer also took on the engraving process. Everything else was fairly easy because it was replicating things similar to the food tour.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Adventurous Bartender story. Tell us more about the business.
The Adventurous Bartender is a physical product created out of love for spirits and the art of bartending. It’s the first product from my food tour company, Foodie Foot Tours. Foodie Foot Tours is a one-of-a-kind culinary experience with a mix of historical and architectural views of the best neighborhoods in a city. The Adventurous Bartender offers a new way to entertain and we hope to help people enjoy craft cocktails in their home and enjoy their guests. We want people to step outside of the box a bit. For us, a cocktail is an enjoyable experience and we want others to experience that same joy. I am most proud of how well this game has been received by professional bartenders. Seeing them play the game and rediscover some of their lost creativity has been amazing. I hope to see this as a staple in bars and homes worldwide.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I can’t speak too much on luck. I have simply put in countless hours of hard work to get to this point. Although the losses I have had have been minimal in business, I believe this is because I work hard to stay ahead of the curve. I’ve made sacrifices with my time, money, sleep, and so many other things, that I don’t want to call it luck that has gotten me here.
