Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashli Mathis.
Hi Ashli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a Marketing graduate from Grambling State University, I always knew I had more to offer than just a typical sales role. I was driven by a passion to help people and organizations, which led me to the GSU recruitment department while I pursued my Master’s degree in Public Administration with a focus on Human Resources Management. My path took a pivotal turn in 2014 when my husband and I started our first business in a local mall in Vicksburg, Mississippi. That experience ignited a fire in us; we realized we had a true passion for business ownership and all the challenges and rewards that came with it.
After dedicating 15 years to building my expertise in HR and Payroll, I saw an opportunity to use my skills to serve a wider audience. I began working as a consultant, lending my expertise to large, respected companies like Nouryon Chemicals, ByteDance/TikTok, and Broadcom/Omnissa. The desire to create something of my own, something that truly reflected my vision, led me to found JDM Consultants. It’s a true partnership, as my husband, who is now a VP of Quality and Safety, serves as my partner in the firm. We specialize in providing critical consulting services to organizations seeking ISO certification and expert assistance with Human Resources and Payroll.
My entrepreneurial journey didn’t stop there. I also started a second venture, Flawless Prints, a print-on-demand business specializing in officially licensed Grambling State University paraphernalia. This journey, from a young graduate to a multi-business owner, has been an incredible testament to the power of God and following your passions and building a career that is truly your own.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road, but that wouldn’t be the full story. Success rarely comes without its share of struggles. There were countless long nights spent balancing a full-time career with the demanding work of building a business from the ground up, all while I was pregnant and starting a family. It was a juggling act, and some days it felt like I was doing three jobs at once.
We’ve also had our share of failures, which I now see as valuable lessons. Early on, we faced common growing pains, from over-preparing for a market that wasn’t ready to making incorrect forecasts that threw our plans off course. And then, on top of everything, we were navigating the challenges of being landlords with homes in two different states other than our own. Each one of these moments forced us to pivot, learn quickly, and come back even stronger. Ultimately, the struggles aren’t just part of the story; they’ve been the key to our growth, teaching us resilience and shaping our business into what it is today.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Our industries are going to be defined by two major shifts: the rapid adoption of technology and a growing focus on sustainability and social impact.
Over the next 5-10 years, AI and automation will become standard in HR and payroll. This shift will move these fields from administrative roles to strategic ones. Technology will allow for more remote and efficient services. For example, ISO certification audits may become more digital, with auditors using technology to ensure compliance.
There’s a growing expectation for companies to demonstrate a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. This means that consulting firms, like JDM, who can help organizations implement eco-friendly practices will be in high demand.
