Meet Austin Nelson of Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Nelson.

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are a family owned and operated business the owner, Kim McKibben, is my mother and I am the General Manager of Frequency Coffee. We started our journey into the coffee world in 2014 when Kim bought that was then a small shop called Big Mike’s Coffee. We had no idea what we were doing. However, through the help of very kind and patient people we learned the ins and outs of not only an amazing cup of coffee but also the incredibly fragile and finicky machine that is a small business. In 2016 we decided that we should put our own mark on the shop and rebranded what is now Aura Coffee.
After I graduated, I began doing more of the behind the scenes work and slowly over the next seven years went from barista to general manager. In 2023 we had an opportunity to expand, and we decided to start looking for a food truck for sale. After asking around we were contacted by the owner of a coffee trailer in Denton that was looking to step away to be able to spend more time with her family. She sold us the trailer, equipment, and recipes but not name so we made Frequency Coffee. We had all the employees stay with us, so we had a very smooth transition from one business to the other. Where, over the last few years I’ve shifted my focus away from managing Aura Coffee to running the trailer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a rollercoaster. With finding our place in the community and fighting to hold it and supporting the people who support us there is always a new adventure that can push us towards bettering ourselves and our business. The thing that I personally think has been our strongest help with dealing with the struggles we’ve run into has been the ability of our team to adapt to the changes and challenges that were thrown at us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the go-to for all things Frequency Coffee. I try to take care of all the small things that make it possible to have a thriving place for myself and my employees to be successful. The thing that I have the most pride in is our ability to form communities from the regulars and the neighbors around us. Even though we are just a small drive through place we take time to talk to and learn about the people and families we are lucky enough to serve.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up, my parents would make a point to take my sister and I out into nature. Whether it was camping trips, evenings in the garden, or days out on the lake they showed us the wonder of our surroundings and gave us the chance to truly be amazed by it.
