Meet Autumn Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Green.

Autumn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started writing stories in the fourth grade, but it wasn’t until ninth grade when the idea for The Keepers of Aris, my debut novel, came to be. The plot line for the story came to me in a dream I had one night. I remember waking up and writing everything I could remember down, but there felt like there was more to the story that had to be told. I completed writing The Keepers of Aris during my time at Drury University. It wasn’t until a couple years after I’d graduated college that I decided it was finally time to do something with my novel. At first, I was met with many rejection letters when it came to submitting my novel to publication companies. Yet, I never became discouraged because I was determined to share my story with the world. Eventually, I had decided to take a self-publishing route, but before I could an opportunity to work with a publishing company came my way. At the time, my friend was attending graduate school at Portland State University and working for Ooligan Press. She encouraged me to submit my novel for publication. I followed her instructions, and Ooligan Press decided to help me publish The Keepers of Aris. It was a long journey, but I never gave up and continued to better my story until I reached a point in life where I was able to finally let it go.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth, but that is expected when trying to achieve any long-term goal. Some of the struggles I encountered were rejection letters. The publishing industry can be extremely competitive. Authors have to compete against each other, but also for the talent acquisition’s time. It was difficult to advocate what made my story different from others like it. One of the things that helped me on my journey was educating myself about current trends within the publishing industry. I had to look at what kind of stories, themes, and marketing strategies were helping other authors stay ahead. Then implement what I had found into my own story. All of this helped make the road a lot more smoother than it had initially been.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an Author native to Kansas City, Mo. My debut novel The Keepers of Aris comes out May 9th, 2023. It can be pre-ordered on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

The Keepers of Aris synopsis:

The human world has almost entirely forgotten about Aris Magica, the secretive realm of magic that exists parallel to humanity. When an evil presence returns to ignite a war between the worlds, Jay must challenge fate and reckon with her growing powers or let Aris Magica and the human world perish.

Jay Raremore has always lived with an immense and growing power but has never known how to control her gifts or why she was given them. All Jay knows is that she’s different from the other kids at the Institute, the boarding school for Aris Magicians where Jay and her best friend study magic.

Dylan McCoy has lost almost everything to a demon except Jay. He will do whatever it takes to protect her and get revenge for his parents’ murders.

But now there is a new threat; Aturdokht, an ancient witch, is awakening, and Jay is the only one who can stop her. After Dylan is attacked by Aturdokht, the leaders of the Institute are put on high alert. They bring in an outsider named Cryis—a man who is more than he appears to be—to train Jay in controlling her magic. Jay must choose to accept her fate or let both worlds burn. Why should she show mercy to the world that has shown her none?

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think being coachable and flexible are important characteristics that have been valuable to my success as an author. It can be difficult to let go of a story you have crafted and perfected for years, but it’s important to be open to changing parts of your story along the way. When I joined Ooligan Press’s team, I had to be open to numerous suggestions from their editing team. The entire time, I had to keep in mind that we were all working towards the same goal: to create the best story that The Keepers of Aris can tell. In doing so, it made the journey to success easier to attain by being open to different perspectives and receiving feedback that could be used to better my craft.
