Today we’d like to introduce you to Awa and Ada Coker.
Awa and Ada, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are twins and originally from Mali in West Africa. My sister and I are a mixed cultural people because our father is a Yoruba man from Nigeria. We always have been passionate about fashion as we grown up in an environment where women and even men appreciate to be well dressed. So, along with our studies, we started to check more about being a model by participating in the stylish presentation. Also, getting some training and practicing through some fashion events.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has just started because we are still in the learning process and things were not really easy in Mali because of people negative perception about being a mannequin/model. Also, the area of modeling is not really developed there and they were less opportunities to get proper training and participate in events. As our dream is to become a well-known model, when we moved to Dallas, we continue checking for resources and opportunities to make it comes true. There, too, we have to struggle because of language as Mali is a French-speaking country and our English is not perfect.
