Meet Ayona Anderson of EJP Marketing Co. in North Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayona Anderson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Much of my journey started with my determination to make and achieve my goals. As a child, those goals were to read a certain number of books, make all A’s…as a teen, those goals were to work and get a car when I turned 16, graduate from high school with a college scholarships…as an adult, my goals have mirrored many of the different stages in life’s complex journey, but my ultimate goals are to live a balanced life (work and have fun; do homework with my son and get a massage; workout and binge on Netflix), and to be a good mother and person.

In 2005, God blessed me to become a mother to a now 12-year-old son. He is my light, my beacon, my star in the sky. We have a special and unique mother, son relationship – one that is beautiful, fun, open and filled with laughter, inspiration, bonding and unconditional love. We can sit and read together, kayak or skateboard for fun, and even make up our own special language.

In 2008, I became a first-generation college graduate after earning a Bachelor of Science in Communications-Public Relations from the University of Texas at Arlington. I later became a Digital Marketing Certified Associate from Simplilearn and Market Motive, a training program facilitated by digital experts from Silicon Valley to India. I went on to gain nearly ten years of experience leading and executing integrated marketing, multicultural marketing, public relations, and digital + social media strategies with national and global agencies and corporations.

A couple of years ago, I took the leap and left corporate America to launch a marketing & PR consulting firm, EJP Marketing Co. LLC. Nearly two years post-launch, EJP is one of the only award-winning, Millennial, woman, and minority-owned marketing and PR consulting firms in Dallas, Texas. I’m beyond proud and thankful to our exceptional clients, business partners, professional connections, consulting partners, and interns – it’s because of our network of positive relationships that we have gotten to where we are today!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, my journey has not been smooth, but I didn’t expect it to be smooth. Life is not smooth. One of my favorite books, “A Road Less Traveled” starts off with these three profound words, “Life is difficult.” I don’t quote this to sound dismal, I just realize this truth in order to intentionally spur a destiny that is filled with hope, love, inspiration, positive people, wondrous experiences, faith, and professional fulfillment. My challenges have come from my own self-doubt, from managing the challenges that accompany being a divorced mom and entrepreneur, and also the challenges of maintaining and growing a business. My perspectives, faith, meditation, Reiki, family, health and love have helped me face these struggles.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have made my spiritual and physical health a key priority in my early 20s. Life lessons and challenges can be more “manageable” when your spiritual and physical health is strong.
