Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Brown.
Kay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The idea was birthed from the fact that since college I’ve always been the “unofficial” drink maker at the parties. One day while brainstorming business ideas and listed all my strengths, a mobile business was devised (more elaborated than that but I’ll keep the details to myself!). However, that idea was not really legal per TABC so I downsized that idea into Bar Bunnies. A mobile bartending service!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been relatively smooth. Getting my business in front of my desired cliental was a struggle at first. I just wasn’t sure how to connect with them. I’m trying to expand my cliental to a higher tier this year and I’m getting there!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bar Bunnies Bartending Services – what should we know?
Bar Bunnies is a mobile bartending company that provides bartending services for just about any special events such as weddings, birthday parties, grand openings, mixers, corporate holiday parties, and more! We are known for not only our fun and entraining bartenders, but for also providing superior service at a reasonable price. I am proud that we have been able to maintain our brand in a professional manner in spite of the fact that when people hear ‘bar bunnies” they imagine women walking around in bunny ears and tails LOL.
One of the things that our clients enjoy and that sets us apart is that we can create signature drinks for any event at no extra charge. The client tells us their preference in alcohol and taste and we put together a few drinks for them to choose from that they would like served at their event. Kind of like when an engaged couple does a cake tasting! We then name the signatures after the theme of the party, the client, or some related to them or the party. We print a menu to post at the bar and we watch the attendees as they enjoy the names that we’ve come up with for the drinks. Another service we provide that sets us apart are private drink parties. We provide the alcohol, the cups, mixers, garnishes etc. We attend the party (usually 10 people or less) and we show the group how to make a one classic cocktail and one signature cocktail. They then partner up and make the drinks for one another. It’s a fun idea for a girl’s night in. For example, one private event we hosted was for the Book 50 Shades of Grey. The signature drink they learned to make was “The Red Room”…..it was interesting!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are a few things that are essential to a startup business: education, finance, and support! I’ve been blessed along the way to have my fair share of all three but more specifically: I attended a small business series that was put on by Shari Hicks and Frost Bank when I first got started and the information I received there was beyond beneficial to me setting my business up to succeed. My good friend Keyshala Phenix, she invested in the business at the start so that I could have attire for my bartenders AND she currently serves as one of my top bartenders! And last but not least, my husband, Chris, he not only cheers me on and supports me but he helps in going out to some of the events and setting the mobile bars up and getting things ready for an event so that myself or the other bartenders won’t have to do it. It helps cut down on set up time which is huge if it’s a large event.
