Meet Barbara Gold of Dallas Family Counseling Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Gold.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After completing a master’s degree in clinical social work, I attended a two year program in marriage and family therapy. After that, I opened my independent practice seeing adults, couples, and teenagers, as well as families I supervised a number of other therapists who were in need of supervision before embarking on solo practices.

Throughout my almost forty years of practice I’ve done many things professionally. I was certified in areas such as hypnosis, mediation, collaborative law and as a sex therapist. The last is the certification I currently maintain. I’ve specialized in areas such as step-families, infertility, sexuality after cancer and others. I had a radio talk show, “Family Values” in the late 1990s and gave talks, training and workshops for professional and lay audiences.

Last year I completed and published a book, “Loving Courageously: First Me, Then You, Now Us” to help readers fill in the many blanks about how to love oneself, communicate effectively, respect boundaries, express anger appropriately, find and maintain a healthy long-term relationship and raise emotionally healthy children-many of the areas which are the most challenging, yet which most of us are never taught how to do. Since I still find myself repeating so much to my clients which they usually haven’t heard before, I felt compelled to write the book for those who either were not in psychotherapy or as an adjunct to therapy for those who are. I continue to practice and still find it enjoyable and rewarding, about which I feel lucky and grateful.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t define it as a struggle, but I keep on learning as I go, and I sometimes wish I knew then what I know now for the sake of my clients! As in any business, the slow times were challenging, but so were the busy times in a different way. I like to joke that there’s that one moment when things are just right, but it rarely comes!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dallas Family Counseling Center – what should we know?
I help people work through problems, grow and almost every time learn to love themselves and give themselves positive instead of negative messages about themselves. I specialize now in working with couples and individuals with sexuality difficulties, however I continue to see people and couples who come to me regarding other issues. To quote what I’ve heard most often, I’m known as “a straight shooter”, which doesn’t mean I judge or attack, but that I’m honest and straightforward, and therefore, for most, trustworthy. It’s hard to say what sets me apart other than my voice and vision which every therapist possesses. I feel good every time I’m successful at helping someone-that’s my stated mission.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My teachers, therapists, colleagues, friends and family all have and many continue to help me keep growing and keep me honest with myself. My “‘team” on my book enabled it to be just what I envisioned, which I could never have accomplished without their input and support.
