Today we’d like to introduce you to Beau Bellomy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Beau. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My Father, Rex, started Rex’s Seafood in Dallas back in 2006 (Inwood and Lovers Area). At that time, Rex’s was only a fresh seafood market, selling product for customers to take home and prepare. When my dad started Rex’s, I was a teenager and was eager to help out and work for him whenever I was available. After a few years, the concept evolved, and we began to offer full-service lunch and dinner while continuing to sell fresh seafood from the market. I really enjoyed working at Rex’s and would be there as much as I could, learning from Rex and the staff he had hired. While still in school, I would work nights, weekends, and holiday breaks. In December of 2011, I graduated from Saint Louis University and immediately began working full time for my dad. I felt Rex’s had become a Dallas staple and the best place in the city to get fresh seafood.
In 2015, an opportunity came up to expand and open another Rex’s location in the newly redeveloped Dallas Farmers Market neighborhood. My dad didn’t seem too interested, but I saw an opportunity, and he allowed me to open my own location within this new development near downtown Dallas. After working in the business for nine years, I felt I was ready to do something on my own. I am fortunate enough to have two older brothers that believed in me and invested in me and the new location downtown. Shortly after opening the downtown location, my dad was ready to get out of the business and closed the original location on Lovers.
I was determined to continue the legacy of Rex’s Seafood in Dallas. I was able to do so at the Dallas Farmers Market location, but after a few years, I was ready to expand, and re-open somewhere near the original location. In February 2019, we opened our 2nd location at Hillcrest and Northwest Highway. The surrounding neighborhoods have been extremely supportive and are very happy to have us back providing the freshest seafood in Dallas.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think there is such a thing as a smooth road in the restaurant industry. Every day brings new challenges. It’s how I handle these challenges and build relationships with employees and customers that help make the road smoother. My goal is to make every employee enjoy coming to work every day and to make every customer happy.
Being a restaurant owner also requires a lot of hours. I am fortunate to have a loving wife that understands my work lifestyle and is able to accept that I won’t be home for dinner every night.
Overseeing and managing two locations can be difficult. I am also fortunate to have great management and staff at each location.
Please tell us about Rex’s Seafood and Market.
We are a fresh seafood market and a restaurant. I always say we are a seafood market first with a restaurant attached. We specialize in fresh seafood flown in from around the globe. On a daily basis, our fish cases will have 15 to 20 different options to choose from. If you are dining in and you don’t see it on the menu, but it’s in the case, we will cook it for you.
I think our variety and freshness sets us apart from anyone else in the city.
