Today we’d like to introduce you to Beena Miller.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Beena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Oh my goodness, where I recently began on the journey to my newfound business would be last year.
I turned the BIG 4-0 last year and the months leading up to that point were pivotal in my career. I realized that I had officially reached “mid-life” and if the average life expectancy for women is 79 years old in the US, then I needed to be doubly sure that the next 39 years of my life expectancy COUNT in everything I do.
I was in an amazing role as a communications & marketing consultant at a very large organization, with work-from-home flexibility and a generous benefits package one could dream of achieving. I enjoyed my 11 + year career, working with incredible clients, and building strong relationships. Turning 40 coupled with my youngest (identical twin daughters) being only months away from heading to Kindergarten, I felt a pull to take a sabbatical from my career to spend more time with my children. My oldest (my son) was also heading into 3rd grade. As working women, we tend to manage more at home while also navigating careers and this was a time where I wanted to sway towards my home-life and children.
However, being a working married couple, I knew I also needed to find a way to continue to contribute to our family finances.
I had a decision. A decision to stay in my role or dive off into the unpredictable life of starting a small business that allowed me to be home with my kids.
I launched Zaney Marketing, a creative digital solutions marketing agency in January 2019 and named my company after my firstborn son Zane. Within my first three months I was surprised to have signed on seven clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The word “easy” is the farthest from the description of this journey….
Initial challenges for me were just the fact that I was working without a team and found myself working 70-80 hours a week. This was the opposite of what I had yearned to do which was spend more time with my children.
I work harder than ever before. There are times I saw my kids and husband, (and friends) LESS than I would have otherwise.
My husband and I realized I needed help. I hired a business coach, built a tiny team to help run my business, and was finally at a point to where I had my weekends back with my family. However, as the months went by I entered into an ebb period in my business as contracts ended.
The ebb experience is the hardest as I have found that it is the polar opposite of what you feel in a corporate environment. In a corporate environment, you welcome an ebb period. When you run your own business, you dread it as finances become tighter.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company Zaney Marketing is a creative social media agency geared towards service-based business owners. My goal is to help my clients build a brand with tactics that result in an increase in revenue. I have over 12 years of experience in marketing and consulting for larger brands and have “grown up around the customer journey.”
I love seeing small businesses flourish and have loved to get to provide opportunities for them to do so with my business. I do this by creating custom marketing plans for my clients and then execute them in the form of Facebook and Instagram advertising campaigns, content marketing, Google My Business optimization, and LinkedIn optimization.
-I have worked with a medical spa and brought in more clients through their doors, doubling their revenue to over 10K in one month.
-I launched a local pre-school and over doubled their enrollment which generated a monthly revenue of over $50k.
-I help realtors grow brands on Instagram organically at the rate of about 10% monthly and sell their listings in 5-10 business days with advertising on Facebook and Instagram.
-I currently help businesses grow revenue through powerful advertising campaigns on social media.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck, fate, or as I believe God… I’ve always believed in the old saying that “everything happens for a reason” and because of that I always keep my mindset open to the good, bad, and ugly when you go through a career journey.
I worked with a small business client that unfortunately had to close their doors before contract was ending. One could see this as “bad luck” but I see it as the valleys that we sometimes go through. Someone once said to me: when you walk through a valley there is always a peak ahead. So I stay open to the valleys and the peaks.
Since starting my company, I’ve also been offered job opportunities at other companies and have always stayed open to conversations. I believe that you should stay open as you navigate your career for a pivot or potential future partnerships for growth. You never know what you are called to do or where you find yourself as your children grow.
