Meet Bert Becerra of Becerra Judo & Jujitsu Club in Garland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bert Becerra.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Judo when I was 6 years old in my native country of Cuba. In my 63-year career in Judo, I won many national championships in my country. Being a part of the national team, I traveled all over the world and in 1970 I defected from Cuba to Canada.

After 9 months, I was able to come to the United States where I settled in Miami. During my time there from 1970-1995, I competed regularly winning numerous championships as well as started my own school and have been teaching ever since. In 1995, I moved to the Dallas area and began teaching once again at my own school as well as Richland College for over 15 years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The training itself is always difficult. It takes hard work, persistence and heart to push through your limitations to accomplish your goals. To become a national champion, it takes a whole other level that you have to push your mind and body to achieve.

Becerra Judo & Jujitsu Club – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I run a successful Judo club that has produced numerous Pan-American champions all over the world as well as students that are members of Team USA Judo.

In addition to the training and championships, our school is dedicated to build strong character, respect and discipline to make overall better people as well as strong fighters.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success of our club is not only defined by the champions we have produced but the people that come out the other side. Seeing kids grow into both successful adults and Judokas makes my years as an instructor worth it. The same is said for the adults who come into better themselves mentally and physically. At the end of the day the champions define the club, but the students define the instructor.
