Today we’d like to introduce you to Oleta Roy.
Oleta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my professional career as a manicurist in 2016. I started working as an independent contractor doing nails in 2017 and that’s where I met my business partner Angela. Despite us being very different, we hit it off almost immediately. Over the years, we started to brainstorm different business ideas and after recognizing a problem area in the nail community, we figured out a solution. The nail industry is predominantly run by the Vietnamese.
We often found ourselves in uncomfortable environments when shopping for supplies to service our clients. We were hounded about having a license as soon as we step foot into their doors and asked for identification when a license was furnished. I used to think to myself. It would be great if we had somewhere to shop that was for us and by us. Dallas, TX, only had only one other company’s nail supply store that wasn’t Asian owned. This year, despite everything going on in the world, we were able to buckle down and focus on making this happen. We were blessed to find the perfect location that allowed us to not only have a store but a manicurist school as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth… lol. Once we found the location, we had a lot to do to the building to make it suitable to the businesses’ needs. We dealt with delays from the city of Dallas that was very discouraging in the beginning. As most business owners know, there’s always something that comes up that we have to deal with. I am so glad to have a partner in this business as to where we can figure everything out together and keep each other encouraged. We both have had our moments of frustration, that’s for sure. I spent many late nights, reaching out to companies trying to build relationships and make those connections needed for purchasing products. I have faith that the road will get somewhat smoother as we grow.
Please tell us about BGM Nail Supply.
Here at BGM Nail Supply, we offer a variety of products that are available for licensed technicians and the general public. We carry items such as acrylic powder, nail polishes, nail files, nail equipment, and much more. We are proud to carry our own line of branded products with so much more coming out soon. What sets us apart from other stores would be the environment itself. We want all customers to feel comfortable and appreciated when they shop in our store. We are here for the people in our community to not only serve but educate DFW’s nail technicians and up and coming techs as well. We are proud to say that we are Dallas, TX’s 1st black-owned nail supply.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have researched more in-depth about the laws and regulations when starting a business legally in the state of TX. Some of those things were trial and error for us. We did lose some time and money, but those were just lessons learned moving forward. I encourage everyone who wants to start a business to read, read, and do some more reading. There is no easy, fast track way to starting a successful business, it’s a lot of hard work.
