Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Lee.
Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, to my current friends and family reading this or new acquaintances I’ve yet to meet, my name is Julie Lee and I have been a model for almost three years! I have always wanted to follow in my mother’s footsteps as a fashion model ever since I was a little girl. Fast forward to college where I met a lovely friend who encouraged me to compete in my first beauty pageant, Miss Asian American Texas 2017.
One of the contestants was an international model that left the competition mid-way after she accepted a role in a Chinese film. That sparked great interest in me, but I made sure not to lose focus. Despite not being crowned on pageant night, I gained more confidence and the ability to strut the runway with regality. Post-competition, I received several opportunities to model or MC at local events and thus, my journey began.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe it’s never a smooth road for anything that’s worth something. One of the biggest struggles of being a petite model is my height. I’m only 5’1! In my opinion, that’s pretty tall 😉 but these modeling agencies can beg to differ, haha. I’ve actually auditioned for a couple of fashion shows and did not hear a response from either one, which is perfectly okay with me. I’m not the type to give up easily.
I want to prove that a petite model is capable of doing anything a runway model can do. Short girls may be tiny, but we are mighty! We can reach the tallest shelves in our own way, by climbing– and that’s exactly what I intend to do in this industry. After many generations, plus-sized models have finally paved way for themselves in the modeling industry and I find that so inspirational. I want to contribute the same for petite models all around the world, because as cliché as it sounds, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s subjective. It comes in all different shapes and sizes. And every change begins with one person: You.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am my own brand: bizzybunnyy. I am a published model and a jack of all trades. I do commercial, film, fashion, promotion, conceptual, editorial, lifestyle, bridal shoots, you name it. I’m known for my portraits, professionalism, and reputation as one of the few local Asian models that are experienced. Honestly, I’m most proud of our artwork (of course). I always refer to it as “our” because I never do it alone. It’s always me and at least one photographer, sometimes multiple, or with a make-up artist, hairstylist, or extra helping hands behind the scenes during a big project.
I’m so thankful for everyone and I make sure to never forget it. What sets me apart from others is my ethnicity. Culture and diversity are such a beautiful thing in artwork and I’m proud to have that going for me. I also have extremely long hair– it’s kind of my trademark. And the fact that I am a rare model who does not shoot boudoir implied, or nude.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I feel like every single person I’ve encountered in or outside of the creative community: clientele, visual artists, models, fashion designers, MUAs, stylists, influencers, bloggers, magazines, businesses, media audience– anyone who’s lifted me, rejected me or interacted with my artwork in any way, plays such a huge role in my success. I actually did not have a mentor. I had to learn by trial and error, the ways of modeling and filming. Luckily, we are all born with an innate sense of creativity (although the level of it will differ), so I merely channeled that when working.
