Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Sexton.
Hi Blake, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello there!
We’ve crossed paths before on Voyage Dallas—my name is Blake, and I’ve been behind the camera for about 15 years now.
Photography is more than just a profession for me—it’s a lifelong passion. I truly can’t imagine doing anything else.
For most of my career, I specialized in concert photography. It was a thrilling experience that allowed me to capture performances by both major artists and incredible local talent. I still enjoy it, but recently, my creative focus has shifted.
About a year ago, I was invited to photograph students at a local fine arts academy. That experience changed everything for me. I felt an artistic fulfillment that I hadn’t experienced before—and I’ve been hooked ever since.
These days, I’m transitioning into portrait photography, where I’ve found new inspiration. I’ve always been drawn to playing with light, color, and texture, and portraiture gives me the perfect space to explore those elements in meaningful ways.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing art as a profession is never easy—it’s not for everyone.
Time is one of the biggest challenges many photographers face. Fortunately, working in the restaurant industry gives me the flexibility to schedule shoots around my other commitments, allowing me to stay creatively active.
Another common hurdle is the cost of gear. I’ve recently been fortunate enough to upgrade my lighting equipment, which has opened up exciting new opportunities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
More than anything, I love experimenting with lighting. I’m always exploring new ways to create drama and mood—creative lighting is my favorite tool for making a subject truly stand out.
I strive for my work to be distinctive. I’ve never been interested in following trends or fitting into a cookie-cutter, corporate style (though there’s nothing wrong with that path).
My goal has always been to develop a visual style that feels unmistakably my own.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Thanks for catching up with me!
Here’s to a photographically productive rest of 2025 to us all!
Never give up on your goals.
