Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Wu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Blake. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always worked in the fitness and health industry since I was an undergraduate at the University of Toronto. And I knew from a very young age that I would work with athletes. I went to the only Chiropractic school in Canada (CMCC) not to become a Chiropractor, but to be able to open the potentials of athlete development and injury prevention. I was only one of two students to take my American Board Exams, which allowed me to find a practice that helped me develop my practice. My first job was with a clinic that was the sole Chiropractic provider of SMU. There I was able to hone my craft with elite female and male soccer players, track and field, and cross-country. After a 2-year stint, I moved on Parker University where I was the youngest Clinic Doctor they have ever hired. There I was in charge of over 20 interns going through their residency.
My time at the University allowed me to carefully investigate the current research in rehab, health, and alternative care. All the while, I was never happy with the state of Chiropractic and how it was run. I found that most Doctors were ineffective and making clinical decisions on OLD RESEARCH. I wanted to disrupt the entire health care market and thus was born The Sports Pod. Chiropractic is a great profession, but personally, I never went to school to become a Chiropractor. I wanted to be more than that. This is why I have trained all our therapist to become Movement Specialist, not Chiropractors. We specialize in analyzing human movement. We are relentless in the refinement of the collective knowledge of health, fitness, and medicine, forging intelligent and healthy athletes.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many struggles along the way, and still to this very day. Throughout my career, everyone has tried to put me in a box. Either it be “Chiropractor” to “Personal Trainer”. And yes, throughout my lifetime I have been both of those things. Often times people here that I’ve studied as a Chiropractor and just assume that I crack necks and backs, or they here that I was a Personal Trainer, so they assume that I just stand there and count sets and reps. I’ve learned both professions in depth and taken the best principles from every fitness industry, and I used those tools to help either prevent/fix injuries or unlock athletic potential. Because I’m in this space, I get a lot of pushback from physical therapist and chiropractors alike. Because they can’t fathom the fact that maybe, I could be this weird hybrid of both.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Sports Pod – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Sports Pod is a band of therapist that is committed to the relentless refinement of the collective knowledge of health, fitness, and medicine, forging intelligent and healthy athletes.
We use techniques and principles from all areas of the fitness and health industry to help us analyze and fix human movement.
We are most proud of our prevention and performance classes. Where we have screened hundreds of female athletes for their potential risk for ACL injuries.
The ACL screening is designed to evaluate an athlete’s overall risk for knee injury. This process examines athletic movement that is required for elite level performance.
Through experience and research, The Sports Pod has found that imbalances and weaknesses are often precursors to catastrophic knee injuries. By putting these athletes through our patented Sports Pod assessment, our Movement Specialists have been able to help provide strategies to bulletproof your athlete’s knee.
Completing The Sports Pod’s trademark ACL assessment will allow our Movement Specialist to tailor a bulletproof rehab strategy for your athlete’s knee.
On the clinic side of things, what sets us apart from others is that we actually spend TIME with each and every athlete. Generally, our appointments run from 45-60 minutes. We allow each athlete to be able to tell their story and let them be a part of the health care every step of the way. We also don’t rush through treatment and make sure you are educated along the way. Many times, athletes have told me that they just had this 1200 dollar MRI and no one sat down to show them exactly what the images and results were. At The Sports Pod, we sit down and explain every detail to you so that you have a good understanding of what is going on.
Another thing that sets us apart is that we are NOT Chiropractors. We are Movement Specialist. We’ve pulled principles and knowledge from a collection of health and fitness industries to be able to individualize treatment for each and every one of our athletes, ensuring effective treatment.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My parents were Chinese immigrants in Canada. So we lived fairly poor for a little while. This meant that we were ALWAYS working. There was no such thing as summer camps or little league for us. As I grew up and got into high school, I had a little more free time where I could take up sports like Hockey, Volleyball, Tennis, Lacrosse and Karate.
I obviously love anything that is involved with fitness. This includes CrossFit classes, to adult gymnastics, to hiking, to swimming
