Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherlyn Mckinzie.
Sherlyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been into makeup since I was in high school helping my friends and playing in makeup. After college, I still had a passion for it and still helped out my friends and family when they needed a makeover. I was in the social work field, and I have always been involved with working with teens in the foster care system or homeless. I was A Case Manager for a year and then became a Program Manager at Promise House for homeless pregnant teens.
I really enjoyed working and learning from young ladies and also helping and preparing them for their journey in life. After being there for five years, I made a career change and really became interested in makeup. I attend CMC makeup school where I was certified as a makeup artist. As I got more into makeup, I really learned that the foundation of flawless makeup is having a good skin care regimen. So I enrolled at Ogle hair skin and nails where I received my Esthetician license, and I am now working for Clinique where I am their first Esthetician in the world! So not only am I doing what I love I am also setting the stage for more Esthetician’s to come and work for this great company.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been easy, but my favorite quote is “without struggle there is no progress” being a single mom and having to juggle my job and also being a makeup artist can be a lot but I love this struggle, and I have the support I need to continue to do what I love.
Also, building clientele and advertising can be a struggle. I am learning to talk to people and be more engaged so that I can help and make as many people feel comfortable in the skin they’rein.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the BLOT – Beauty Lasting Over Time story. Tell us more about the business.
My company name is BLOT – meaning Beauty Lasting Over Time. To me, Beauty is ageless and timeless that we will always be beautiful no matter how old or who you are. I specialize in peels, waxing, eyelashes, facials, makeup and more. I’m proud of the relationships I have built and also other artists that have the same passion as I do.
My most proudest moment is participating in New York Fashion week doing makeup and just being that atmosphere. I met some incredible people there and built some relationships. I knew this was my calling because I felt so at home and seeing my work on the runway just gave me that extra push to keep going.
I feel having my background working with people and understanding others it helps me to relate better with clients and also making them feel comfortable about the skin their in. I feel that I not only make them beautiful, but I give them the tools to continue with their skin care.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
In 5-10 years I will have my instructors license and working in my own school and having my own makeup boutique. Every morning I wake up these two things are the first thing on my mind.
I feel I can help others learn and be apart of a growing industry. I will start school this May to obtain my instructor license so keep your eyes open because it’s only up from here. I want to be able to provide for my community and also to help others provide for their families.
