Meet Bobby Abtahi of Law Office of Robert Abtahi in North Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Abtahi.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bobby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After law school, I started out at a big firm and didn’t feel like I was making the most of my skills. I’ve always had a passion for helping solve problems and entrepreneurship so deciding to start my own law firm was a natural move. Like starting any business it was extremely stressful at first but after a few weeks the idea of being my own boss started to feel normal. Trying to find practical solutions for clients and giving excellent service are the two biggest factors I’ve relied on to continue growing my business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I tell anyone who is in the professional service field that the top two issues they will face is finding clients and then convincing those clients to pay them. I’ve been working for myself for almost seven years now and the first year was really the toughest. Everything was trial and error. When you’re first starting out the business plan budget is always tight and errors cost valuable working capital. Everyone was pushing internet marketing at the time so I wasted a lot of money and time chasing down pipe dreams that spending a lot of money on search engine optimization would produce results. Once you find a marketing plan that will produce results then the issue becomes finding a system that will allow people to pay you as conveniently as possible. Putting together a seamless system took time and I still tweak things every chance I get.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The easiest way to describe what we do is to simply call ourselves a law firm but I don’t think that does a good job of explaining the extent of our work to the average person. Lawyers are often times called counselor for the simple fact that we give advice or counsel our clients. This is really no different than an a outside consultant except that we focus primarily on legal matters but that usually ends up getting into general business advice too. My firm handles everything from complex real estate transactions to a car accident case. We have attorneys and staff that each focus in the niche but my personal time is spent advising doctors on the ins and outs of running their own businesses. I serve as an outside general counsel to over 50 healthcare practices throughout the state of Texas with the majority of my clients have their operations in the North Texas region.

I’m probably most known for being able to give honest practical advice. Lots of lawyers try to overly complicate matters and some lawyers do so just so that then charge their clients more money. I try to be straightforward with my clients both in my advice and my billing. There are times, when things can be done quick and cheap but there will be times, where something complicated will take long and cost a lot. Trying to make sure that quick and cheap doesn’t turn into long and expensive is a big part of my job. I’m most proud of the fact that we provide the same service to a one man entrepreneur as we do to our clients with hundreds of employees. Helping people navigate the law and not have to worry about legal problems is a simple but invaluable skill.

What sets us apart is being easily accessible to our clients and not killing them with over billing. For my long time clients, I try to be available 24/7. If I miss a call, I make sure it’s returned within 24 hours. The number one complaint people have about lawyers is a lack a communication. We over communicate to make sure to never have that complaint.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a bit of an over thinker. I try to think through as many scenarios as possible before I try anything new. That attitude has probably prevented me from doing certain things sooner than I should’ve. I try to fill my head with as much knowledge as possible so traveling to all kinds of different places is a major interest. If money were no object then I would be in a different country every week. Most of all, I try not to take myself too seriously.
