Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Hood.
Hi Bobby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Dallas and attended Lake Highlands High School, where I was the valedictorian and the president of the Student Council. I scored 35 on the ACT and attended college on a full-ride scholarship. After that, I worked as a CPA for two years and then attended law school, and worked as an attorney for 10 years.
But I never felt very fulfilled as a CPA or an attorney. In 2011, I returned to my passion for teaching and started a new career as a tutor. I began working for The Princeton Review and, after a few years, I was one of the top 10 most requested tutors in the nation. I was one of the national trainers of new tutors and helped write books and tests that are still used today in Princeton Review courses.
In 2017, I began tutoring independently, and now I work from home in Lakewood tutoring students for the SAT, ACT, and ISEE (as well as the graduate school tests — LSAT, GRE, GMAT, and MCAT),
I specialize in helping students improve their score very efficiently. My typical student gets to their goal score in about 5 or 6 hours. But it’s not just about helping a student reach a particular score: I help students realize that they do have the skills to perform well on standardized tests and overcome the anxiety and stress that these tests cause. My students end up more confident and better prepared, not just for the ACT or SAT but also for the challenges that college will bring.
It’s an amazingly rewarding and fulfilling career, and I love being able to help Dallas students from all walks of life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting an entirely new career as an entrepreneur after age 40 was very intimidating. It wasn’t easy to start from scratch and create a business, and I had to refocus my energy a lot in order to start seeing success.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m known for getting students done with their preparation for the ACT and SAT (and other tests) much faster than the typical group course or individual tutor. Part of that speed and efficiency is that I focus on the questions students missed to help them get similar questions right the next time, instead of trying to teach every strategy for every question. Also, I work with students exclusively online, which has enormous benefits: every problem we work through, everything I say, is saved as a PDF file the students can review later. And students can tutor with me even when they are traveling, or stuck at home. I’m available 7 days a week and able to work with students on the schedule that’s best for them.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’ve always loved Dallas for the people who come here from all over the world to make it their home. You can find people of every type, every viewpoint, in Dallas.
