Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Borja.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when my father bought my first DSLR camera when I was seventeen-years-old. I had no intention of getting into photography, but my father always pushed me to try new hobbies and expand my comfort zone. Turning eighteen and becoming a freshman in college, I had to figure out what to do with my life. My parents wanted me to pursue nursing; however, that was not what I saw myself doing. I found myself staying up late due to homework, studying for lectures that didn’t capture my attention and attending classes that would overwhelm me with information that I couldn’t wrap my head around. I had to find some way to decompress and photography turned into an outlet for expressing my emotions. That’s when I started taking pictures for fun.
Immediately, I became fascinated with photography. Semester after semester, I continued taking pictures and decided that I would change my major to general studies and focus my way into freelance photography. A few years go by and companies began showing interest in my pictures. From that point on, a lightbulb went off in my head, and at that moment I knew that my appreciation and love for photography could be more than just a hobby, I could turn it into a career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sadly, my road to success has not always been smooth sailing. I faced a lot of adversity through the years, but it shaped me into the type of business person I wanted to be and eventually became. Being the one-man show of marketing and advertising has its pros and cons. It was difficult getting my work out, and it was not an easy challenge. From living in a well-developed town such as Dallas, where everyone knows everyone, it was hard for people to see my work without other people stealing the spotlight. To sum it all up, you have to keep on trying and not give up even when things don’t seem to go your way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BorjaVisuals – what should we know?
For starters, my company and my brand (www.BorjaVisuals.com), are my own. Like I said before, I’m a one-man show. My profession in photography is mainly landscaping, celebratory events, and family/solo photos. The most renown picture that I’m known for is the “SpaceX” launch that happened in San Francisco on Oct. 7, 2018. That photo has given me many more opportunities than I could’ve ever imagined. I’m especially proud of the connections and relationships that I’ve made with people over the years in my career. What sets me apart from others is how I reassure people by showing them pictures of them shortly after, getting their feedback on the type of photos they would like to take, and being flexible.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
This might be cliche but being yourself and staying original through your own art. Focus on things you want to achieve and maintain your own style throughout your career.
