Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Wilkerson.
Brad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In the fall of 2007, a handful of families began meeting on the 380 Corridor with the goal of reaching people for Christ. They saw a need, a need for a church that would not only reach into many neighborhoods but would be a place that unchurched people would want to go to church. They also wanted to start a church that each of them would want to invite their friends and family to as well.
In February of 2008, Rock Creek Church (formerly named Church of Celebration Metro aka COC Metro) hosted its first public preview service at Savannah Elementary School. 148 were in attendance that night. COC Metro continued to lease Savannah Elementary School on Saturday nights where they had church through the end of August 2008. As a result of their passion and vision, COC Metro was launched on September 7, 2008! 184 people were in attendance and the first membership was chartered with just over 50 people.
A year later, COC Metro, relocated to Paloma Creek Elementary School and soon after, a second Sunday morning worship service was added. After two years at Paloma Creek Elementary, COC Metro began to hold worship services at Navo Middle School and remained there until the fall of 2019.
On June 15, 2014, the church closed on 30 acres of land located at 28691 Harper Road, Prosper, TX, where its current main campus is now located. On September 8 of that same year, COC Metro took residence on the land for its church offices and ministry center. On January 28, 2018, COC Metro held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first permanent facility on the 30 acres of land in Prosper and construction on Phase One (25,000 sq ft worship & children’s facility) of its main campus began in the spring of that year with a projected completion date in the fall of 2019.
In the summer of 2018, the leadership of COC Metro led the congregation through a name change and rebrand that would be effective once the move was completed from Navo Middle School to the permanent facility in Prosper. After many hours and days of work, the leadership settled on the name Rock Creek Church and it was presented to the entire congregation on February 24, 2019, and was received with overwhelming confirmation.
Over the years, there have been many changes, but our God-given mission and vision has never changed. The heart behind everything we do is to “Help People MEET & FOLLOW Jesus.” That’s what it was about in the beginning and that’s what it continues to be about still today.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a joy but there have been struggles along the way. Whether it’s been staff transitions or being in a portable setting for over 11 years, it has certainly had its moments of challenge. However, each step of the way we have overcome and grown from our challenges. Challenges have simply made us better.
Please tell us about Rock Creek Church.
The vision of Rock Creek Church is simply to help people meet and follow Jesus. We are known for being Biblically pure while being culturally relevant. It gives me great joy to pastor a church that welcomes people who are not ok, as well as a church that challenges people to say it’s not ok to stay not ok. Family and community set us apart from others. Our church is much more than just a Sunday service. It’s about a daily walk with Christ.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see the church continue to grow as the North Dallas area continues to grow exponentially with many people moving to this area who need hope in life. I also see that as the congregation numbers grow on Sunday, the church must continue to grow smaller through community through service projects and community groups.
