Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Head.
Brandon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started in August of 2009 with a vision of bringing CrossFit and its methodologies to the masses. Since I first found CrossFit, I had the thought of having my own gym, but didn’t know when I could appropriately pull it off. I was coaching at CrossFit Lewisville (formerly CrossFit Denton County) from its humble beginnings for about a year and decided it was time to open my own place. I was a commercial banker at the time, with a degree in Finance from UNT and I’d had enough of the bank life so this seemed to be the next logical step. I had a plan in order and just needed a place to execute it. Driving through Grapevine one day, I came across a building for lease, called the landlord and we met up to discuss. Shortly after we agreed on terms and Grapevine CrossFit opened up 2 months later. We superseded our expectations and grew at a great pace over the coming years. 2 years into business it was decided that more space was needed and we moved the company a couple miles from its original location to where it is now. We tripled the space to make room for our growing community, and grow it has. We’ve been in business now for close to 8 years, which is a feat within itself. There’s been a lot of ups and down with owning a small business and being in the fitness industry but the good vastly outweighs the bad. I wish we could’ve held onto every person that’s been through our gym over the years, but we have a great community of people that love to come in and work hard every day, and that’s what keeps us coming back every day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part it’s been a smooth run. There was a rough patch in the middle that involved a partner buyout that wasn’t exactly pretty. Having almost lost the motivation to keep this place running and coming back from that as it’s only option to stay open was tough but has since been the best move we ever could’ve made. Other than that, typical ups and downs of membership numbers and costs outweighing income have been a couple of gripes over the years.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in CrossFit. I’d like to think we are one of the more well-known gyms in the DFW area given our time in business and the product that we put out. That being said, I think it’s one of the things I’m most proud of. We have a great reputation and we’ve worked hard for it.
What were you like growing up?
I played sports throughout most of my life. Baseball was my sport of choice all the way through high school. I had a couple options to play ball at some smaller schools but chose to attend Texas A&M since it was my education school of choice. After the first semester, I missed baseball so much! I grew up hunting with my dad, so that’s been my “hobby” for as long as I can remember. I was an active kid growing up, played outside as often as I could, played video games when it was an option, and got into the typical troubles that boys do. College allowed me to come out of my shell a bit and become more comfortable with who I am which has shaped who I have become today.
