Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Mitchell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brandon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I went to Careers Unlimited Barber School in Longview Texas. After getting my license I worked at Vicky’s Divine Cutz in Marshall Texas owned by Vicky Allen. She taught me almost everything about being a professional barber. After working there for 3 1/2 years Mrs. Vicky along with family convinced me to take a leap of faith and try to further my barbering career in Dallas. I was nervous coming from a small town to a big city but failure was not an option. I worked in two different shops in 4 1/2 years and in that time my clientele has continuously grown.
While in the first shop I also was cutting the SMU Football team where I met Deion Sanders Jr. who is the founder of the Well Off Brand. I became his personal barber and as time went on we became like brothers rather than barbers and clients. I also had the pleasure of working with a great artist and barber by the name of Tre Baker who taught me how to do designs and even offered me an opportunity to move to California to cut hair. Instead, I decided to stay here and when the decision to open the shop came about I asked if I could call it Well Off and he gave me the blessing and OK. We opened on January 16, 2016. Also working with me is my great friend, great barber, and brother Earl Pittman who I’ve worked with 3 1/2 years prior to that and I appreciate him more than he knows.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Bills can get tough and finding dependable and professional barbers also can be a pain. No matter what though God always provides and also the support of family and friends is a blessing as well. Also losing young customers to violence tends to be tough to deal with because as barbers we get to see kids grow right before our eyes and to lose them to senseless violence are wrong decisions can tend to weigh on you. You grow relationships with these kids. There are things they share with their barber that they may not want to go to their parents for, we are more than barbers sometimes. we are counselors, role models and sometimes positive influence for them as well as more things.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, Off Barbershop is not just a barbershop. Its a place that’s drama free, family-oriented, and a place where people can feel safe. All ethnicities are welcome. We specialize in kid’s and men’s cuts as well as some women short cuts. Also freestyle designs as well as razor work. We are known for not only our great work with the clippers but also giveaways, video game tournaments, fight nights, and cookouts for the customers. I’m most proud that no matter how hard things get God continues to bless us with more success each and every day. What sets us apart from everyone is our pricing, people friendliness, the care that we put into our work and the fact that we love what we do and we show it our cuts.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a great city to start a barbershop or a small business. The biggest things are God, promoting, availability, quality, and location.
