Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Davis.
Brandy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013 I found out I was pregnant, so I quit my job due to it being an unsafe environment for a pregnant woman. I immediately found another job and there was definitely a pay decrease, which was huge to my bank account. I was now a pregnant college student making 7.25 per hour. I was too busy and tired to go out, so I stayed home a lot. I thought to myself, how am I going to support myself and my new baby when she gets here making close to nothing. I was at home bored A LOT, and I was watching DIY videos on how to make your own lipsticks. I decided to take my last 113$ and buy the ingredients. I must say it was messy and the trial and error sure did make me reconsider. I ended up taking a break from it. About a month later, I decided to open an Etsy and Instagram page, but this time it was all about glitters.
I made my first sale and was so ecstatic. However, that was the only sale for almost three months. I ended up trying the lipsticks again and randomly got an email with a girl requesting a custom shade. I ended up making it and showed all my followers and my picture went viral. Just like that, I became an overnight success. I was making almost 600$ a month working full time to 23,000$ in my account overnight. I came into the makeup game at the perfect time. I found my calling and ran with it. Now seven years later, I have my warehouse with four employees, just built a brand new home and financially comfortable, which that’s all I wanted in the first place.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started, I was learning everything from formulating to customer service. There were times where I made mistakes, but I learned from it quickly and didn’t make the same mistake twice.
Please tell us about your business.
We handmake all of our formulas in house by trail and error. Meaning we didn’t stop formulating until we got it right. We hand make and produce all of our products in house, which makes us special in a way versus having a mass produced product. It’s more of quality control when it’s made by hand. We’re known for our high pigmentation and our swatches. Also, we’re vegan and cruelty free.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories?
When I lived in Grand Prairie, all my best memories came from 98” to 2001. I would remember the skating rink where all my friends would meet up on a Friday. I would remember all the fun times I had in junior high.
