Today we’d like to introduce you to Breonna Batson.
Breonna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a former President of a prestigious organization called Collegiate 100 of Texas Southern University, an affiliation of 100 Black Men of America and 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston and we would mentor many students of Texas Southern University and Third Ward community. Mentorship and leadership development is a passion of mine; however, the society we live in did not encourage the importance of mentorship, effective leadership, and the importance of self- representation. Therefore, I felt that I was called to be a catalyst for change. So, Protect Tha Brand emerged from a place of pain to a place of purpose. I initially used Protect Tha Brand as my vision and motto for my administration as President, but it emerged into a mantra of purpose and a lifestyle of positive self- representation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but God has been great and faithful. Protect Tha Brand is extremely new (10 months old); therefore, we are still in the beginning stages of exposing the brand and the mission of PTB, but with dedication, sacrifice, hard work, and keeping God first we will continue to do great things. We just have to remain focused on our vision and that is to be change agents in the community and shed light on the importance of positive self-representation and protection of your image and everything connected to you.
Please tell us about Protect Tha Brand.
Protect Tha Brand is a brand that provides high-quality fashion while being the catalyst of change through mentoring and developing young leaders in the Dallas- Fort Worth community. My business partner Kavon and I are very proud of well we are received by the youth. It was my vision to capture the attention of the youth through the vehicle of fashion, but I wanted us to capture their hearts through our experiences and our passion. It brings joy to my heart when students are constantly asking for a PTB apparel, and then text or ask me for advice or update Kavon and me on their accomplishments and even their downfalls and ask for guidance on a step in a new direction. Protect Tha Brand is not looking for fame, we are looking for the youth to become FREE in themselves, but to understand the importance of self-representation and the benefits and the effects of protecting their identity in every aspect of their lives.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t change a thing because Protect Tha Brand was birthed with purpose and every step along the way is an intricate and necessary footprint to the next level.
