Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Sims.
Bria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey began with family. I saw different family members living an unhealthy lifestyle which lead them to unwanted health situations and a life they preferred not to live. I realized early on, I did not want the same thing for myself so I decided to make a lifestyle change. My parents had already begun their journey of eating healthy, so it was not hard to stay on track with that. Finding the motivation to consistently workout came from my brother; he taught me consistency. Being in college was tough because I was my only support to continue the healthy eating habits that my parents had started to instill in me. I also was my only motivation to consistently workout because my brother was not there to encourage me. It was a long journey of on and off the consistency of both working out and eating right, but one day, it clicked and stuck with me and I began going full force with it all. I started feeling more confident with myself and discovered self-love because working out helps not just physically but emotionally and spiritually.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Everything was smooth sailing until me and my family came back from our trip in August of 2018 from Alabama. I ended up having a kidney stone which confused me greatly because I am a healthy young adult. The doctor himself could not explain exactly why I got them; I also ended up having one other complication and had to have surgery as well. All this was in a span of almost three weeks in which I lost a lot of muscle mass and began looking weak and small. I was gravely upset and discouraged because I worked so hard to lose the fat and tone up my body, just to end up at square one again. However, this time the tables had turned. I needed to gain weight instead of losing. Even after it was all over I was told to take it slow and no heavy lifting. With that being said, I was out of the gym for about a month so when the time came to come back, I struggled. Instead of heavy cardio and light weight lifting I had to flip the script and start lifting more/heavier weight and doing less cardio so I could get my weight back to where I wanted. I lost almost 30 pounds when dealing with my kidney stones. It took time but I continued being consistent and I eventually got back to my goal weight.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bri.b.fit-Consistency&Confidence – what should we know?
My fitness business Consistency&Confidence is to motivate people to keep moving in any way, whether that be working out, yoga or dance. I have seen what not moving can do to people through my family and I encourage it so much in others. I also wanted people to love and discover the confidence within them. I have a quote on my Instagram fitness page that I made up that says, “Don’t workout to look like someone else; workout to discover YOU!” I post my workouts online for motivation or for people to get new workout ideas to incorporate in their own or to simply just follow mine. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback, especially on my ab workouts. In each workout, I do different exercises because it is good to shock your body. Once your body gets used to what you routinely do it will no longer show results like you want. You must keep it fresh and new. Even doing a workout backwards will make a huge difference. I enjoy helping others without a doubt which is why I find pleasure in giving people advice and helping them get to or even just kickstart their journey.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My brother, Jeffery Sims Jr. is my biggest supporter and motivator. He not only got me started, but he continues to help me grow in my fitness journey and teaches me new techniques. My parents, Debra and Jeffery Sims Sr., continue to support and encourage me through this journey and my new found love. My best friend, Jalisa Phillips, is my guinea pig. She is always down to try a new workout I come up with. No matter the difficulty, she puts her all into it. I can not thank my support system enough for their love and encouragement.
